Loop
“Wander beneath whispering pines and blooming heaths, where wildlife and history quietly weave through tranquil landscapes.”
Starting from the edge of the Veluwe near the village of Tongeren, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk through one of the Netherlands’ most tranquil forest and heath landscapes. With virtually no elevation gain, it’s accessible for hikers of all abilities, making it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful day outdoors.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Tongerenseweg and Schotweg, just outside Epe. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Apeldoorn or Zwolle stop at Epe, from where local bus lines or a short taxi ride can bring you to the starting point. Drivers can park at the small lot near Tongerenseweg, close to the entrance of the Veluwe forest.
Trail Experience
Woodlands and Heaths
The route quickly immerses you in the Veluwe’s characteristic scenery: a patchwork of pine and deciduous forests, open heathlands, and sandy paths. Early in the walk, you’ll notice the transition from cultivated fields to wild, protected nature. In late summer, the heath bursts into purple bloom, while spring brings a chorus of birdsong and fresh green foliage.
Wildlife and Nature
Keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and the occasional wild boar, especially in the quieter morning or evening hours. Birdwatchers will appreciate the variety of woodland species, including woodpeckers and buzzards. The sandy soils and scattered juniper bushes are typical of the Veluwe, and you may spot rare butterflies and lizards basking on sunny days.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
This region has a long history of human settlement, with ancient burial mounds hidden among the trees and remnants of old cart tracks crisscrossing the landscape. The Veluwe was once a royal hunting ground, and the area’s isolation helped preserve its natural beauty. Along the route, you may pass traditional Dutch farmhouses and the occasional sheep herd, a nod to the area’s pastoral heritage.
Navigation and Facilities
The trail is well-marked, but for added confidence and route planning, use HiiKER for up-to-date maps and navigation. There are no major facilities directly on the route, so bring water and snacks. Benches are scattered along the way, perfect for a rest or picnic.
Points of Interest
About halfway through, the path skirts the edge of the Tongerense Heide, a wide-open heathland that offers sweeping views and a sense of solitude rare in the Netherlands. The interplay of light and shadow through the trees, especially in the early morning, is a highlight for photographers.
Practical Tips
The flat, sandy paths are suitable for sturdy walking shoes, but after heavy rain, some sections can become muddy. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash due to wildlife. The area is popular with cyclists and horseback riders, so be mindful at trail crossings.
This easy, scenic loop is a perfect introduction to the Veluwe’s natural and cultural riches, offering a peaceful escape just a short journey from the bustle of the city.
