Loop
“Wander through a tapestry of purple heather, ancient farm tracks, and woodland alive with birdsong.”
Nestled in the heart of the Veluwe region, this gentle 5 km (about 3.1 miles) loop begins near the village of Tongeren, just outside Epe in Gelderland, Netherlands. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is perfect for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful stroll through classic Dutch heathland.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near the Tongerense Heide parking area, close to the intersection of Tongerenseweg and Boerweg. If arriving by public transport, take a train to Nunspeet or Epe, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 104 or 112) that stops at Tongeren or the nearby Tongerenseweg. From the bus stop, it’s a short walk to the start. For those driving, ample parking is available at the Tongerense Heide car park, which is well signposted from the main road.
Trail Experience
Heathland and Forest Mosaic The route quickly immerses you in the open expanse of Tongerense Heide, a protected heathland renowned for its purple heather blooms in late summer. The landscape is dotted with solitary pines and birches, and the sandy paths are easy underfoot. After about 1 km (0.6 miles), the trail veers onto Boer Weg, a historic farm track that once connected local agricultural communities. Here, you may spot grazing sheep, a traditional method for maintaining the heath’s delicate ecosystem.
Van Manenspad and Wildlife At roughly the halfway point, the loop joins Van Manenspad, a path named after a local conservationist. This section meanders through a patchwork of heath and mixed woodland, offering shade and the chance to spot roe deer, foxes, and a variety of birds including woodlarks and tree pipits. Listen for the distinctive calls of the Eurasian jay and keep an eye out for sand lizards basking on sunny patches.
Landmarks and Points of Interest Along the way, you’ll pass several information boards detailing the area’s natural and cultural history. The heathland itself is a remnant of centuries-old land use, shaped by grazing, sod-cutting, and controlled burning. Near the 3 km (1.9 mile) mark, a small wooden observation platform provides sweeping views across the open heath—a perfect spot for a rest or a picnic.
Navigation and Facilities
The loop is well-marked with colored posts, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check your progress. There are no steep sections or technical challenges, making it accessible for most walkers. Benches are scattered along the trail, and while there are no toilets directly on the route, facilities can be found at nearby cafes in Tongeren or Epe.
Seasonal Highlights and Tips
Late August and early September are especially beautiful when the heather is in full bloom, painting the landscape in vibrant purples. Spring brings a flush of wildflowers and the return of migratory birds. The trail is open year-round, but waterproof footwear is recommended after rain, as some sandy sections can become muddy.
This loop offers a tranquil escape into one of the Veluwe’s most picturesque heathlands, with easy access, rich biodiversity, and a gentle introduction to the region’s unique natural and cultural heritage.
