Loop
“Wander through Enkhuizen’s golden-age harbor, tranquil polders, and bird-filled woodlands on this picturesque loop.”
Begin your journey in the charming harbor area of Enkhuizen, a historic Dutch town renowned for its maritime heritage. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Oude Haven, just a short walk from Enkhuizen’s main train station, making it easily accessible by public transport from Amsterdam and other major cities. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the harbor and the town center.
Exploring Enkhuizen’s Maritime Past
The first section of the loop winds through the cobbled streets and canals of Enkhuizen, a town that flourished during the Dutch Golden Age. As you stroll past the Drommedaris, a 16th-century city gate and one of Enkhuizen’s most iconic landmarks, take in the views of historic ships moored along the quays. The Zuiderzee Museum, located nearby, offers a glimpse into the region’s seafaring history and traditional Dutch life.
Open Countryside and Het Streekbos Nature Reserve
Leaving the town behind, the route follows quiet dikes and country lanes, with flat terrain throughout—expect no more than a few feet (0 meters) of elevation gain over the entire 18 km (about 11 miles). The landscape opens up to classic Dutch polder scenery: wide skies, grazing cattle, and windmills in the distance. After approximately 6 km (3.7 miles), you’ll enter Het Streekbos, a 300-hectare nature reserve known for its woodlands, meadows, and lakes.
Wildlife and Natural Highlights
Het Streekbos is a haven for birdwatchers, with reed beds and wetlands attracting herons, grebes, and kingfishers. The well-marked trails meander through mixed forests and along tranquil ponds, where you might spot frogs, dragonflies, and the occasional roe deer. The Bezoekerscentrum Streekbos (Visitor Center), located about 9 km (5.6 miles) into the hike, is an excellent spot to pause. Here, you’ll find educational exhibits, a café, and restrooms. The center also provides information on local flora and fauna, and is a good place to refill water bottles.
Return via Rural Villages and Canals
The loop continues through the peaceful countryside, passing small villages and traditional Dutch farmhouses. The route is mostly paved or on well-maintained gravel paths, making it suitable for all fitness levels and accessible year-round. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any temporary diversions.
Getting There and Practical Tips
Enkhuizen is well-served by regular trains from Amsterdam Centraal (about 1 hour), and the station is less than 10 minutes’ walk from the Oude Haven. If driving, follow signs to Enkhuizen town center and park near the harbor. The trail is flat and easy, with no significant elevation changes, making it ideal for families, casual walkers, and those looking for a relaxed day out in nature. Bring weather-appropriate clothing, as the open polders can be breezy, and pack a picnic to enjoy at one of the many scenic spots along the route.
