Loop
“Meandering past willows, wildflowers, and riverside vistas, this Zutphen loop captures Gelderland’s peaceful rural charm.”
Starting from the outskirts of Zutphen, near the well-known landmark of the Zutphen train station, this gentle 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop offers a flat and accessible route through the tranquil Dutch countryside, with virtually no elevation gain. The trail is perfect for beginners or those seeking a leisurely day outdoors, winding through a patchwork of meadows, small woodlands, and rural farmland typical of the Gelderland region.
Getting There
Reaching the trailhead is straightforward. If arriving by public transport, take a train to Zutphen station, which is well-connected to major Dutch cities. From the station, it’s a short walk or cycle to the start of the loop, making this hike especially convenient for those relying on public transit. For drivers, parking is available near the station and in surrounding residential areas.
Route Highlights and Navigation
The loop leads you first through the Kolkweiden, a serene area characterized by lush grasslands and scattered willow trees. In spring and summer, the meadows are alive with wildflowers and the calls of lapwings and skylarks. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the trail and check your progress.
After about 3 km (1.9 miles), you’ll pass close to the IJssel river, where you can spot herons and, if you’re lucky, a kingfisher darting along the water’s edge. The riverbanks are a great spot for a short break, offering wide views across the floodplains.
Elshof and Rural Heritage
Continuing, the trail loops through the hamlet of Elshof, a small cluster of traditional Dutch farmhouses. This area has a rich agricultural history, with evidence of farming dating back centuries. The landscape here is dotted with old barns and hedgerows, and you may see grazing sheep or cattle. At around the halfway point, you’ll find a small chapel, a quiet reminder of the region’s rural religious traditions.
Nature and Wildlife
The flat terrain and open fields make this loop ideal for birdwatching. In addition to farmland birds, look for hares in the fields and, in the wetter areas, frogs and newts. The woodlands along the route are home to woodpeckers and tawny owls, especially active at dusk.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
Expect mostly well-maintained dirt and gravel paths, with some sections on quiet country roads. After heavy rain, some parts may be muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are no steep sections, making the route accessible for families and those with limited mobility.
Facilities are limited along the route, so bring water and snacks. Public toilets and cafés are available near Zutphen station at the start and end of the hike. The entire loop can be completed in 2.5 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace.
