Loop
“Wander through blooming heaths, ancient paths, and tranquil wetlands in Drenthe's quietly enchanting heart.”
Starting from the vicinity of Elp, a small village in the province of Drenthe, the Golloerveen and Elper Noorderveld Loop offers a gentle 8 km (about 5 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with parking available near Elp, or by public transport via bus connections from Assen or Emmen, stopping at Elp or nearby Westerbork.
Landscape and Terrain
The route meanders through the serene landscapes of Drenthe, renowned for its expansive heathlands, peat bogs, and tranquil forests. The terrain is predominantly flat, with well-maintained paths suitable for walking year-round. Expect a mix of sandy tracks, grassy trails, and occasional wooden boardwalks over wetter sections, especially after rain.
Nature and Wildlife
The Golloerveen and Elper Noorderveld are part of a protected nature reserve, home to a mosaic of habitats. In spring and summer, the heathlands burst into color with blooming heather and wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees. Birdwatchers can spot species such as the curlew, lapwing, and sometimes the rare black grouse. Roe deer and foxes are also known to inhabit the area, and early morning or dusk are the best times for wildlife sightings.
Significant Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Golloerveen Heath: Around 2 km (1.2 miles) into the loop, the trail opens onto the Golloerveen, a classic Drenthe heathland. This area is especially atmospheric in late summer when the heather is in full bloom. - Elper Noorderveld: At roughly the halfway point, the trail skirts the Elper Noorderveld, a mosaic of peat bogs and wet meadows. Wooden observation platforms provide excellent vantage points for birdwatching and photography. - Ancient Trackways: Drenthe is rich in prehistoric history, and while walking, you may notice subtle ridges and ditches—remnants of ancient trackways and field systems dating back to the Bronze Age. Informational signs along the route provide context about the region’s archaeological significance.
Navigation and Safety
The loop is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore nearby points of interest. The flat terrain and clear paths make the route suitable for families and less experienced hikers, but waterproof footwear is advisable after heavy rain due to occasional muddy patches.
