The Weeren Broek and Heijkersbroek Loop is an approximately 8-kilometer (5-mile) circular trail with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. The trailhead is located near the village of Swartbroek in the province of Limburg, Netherlands.Getting ThereTo reach Swartbroek by car, take the A2 motorway and exit at Weert-Noord (Exit 38). From there, follow signs to Swartbroek, which is about a 10-minute drive. Parking is available at Sint Cornelisplein, near the church in Swartbroek. For those using public transport, buses run from Weert to Swartbroek; check local schedules for the most current information.Trail OverviewStarting from Sint Cornelisplein, the trail leads you through a diverse landscape of forests, wetlands, and meadows. The path is well-marked and primarily consists of unpaved surfaces, accounting for about 84% of the route. This makes it unsuitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Dogs are permitted, provided they are kept on a leash and local regulations are followed.Natural HighlightsThe route traverses several notable nature reserves:- De Krang: This area features a mix of deciduous and coniferous forests, coppice woods, grasslands, and ancient arable fields. The Leukerbeek stream flows through the northern part, while the Tungelroyse Beek runs through the south.- Heijkersbroek: Characterized by deciduous forests, small grassland plots, and various ponds, this reserve is also intersected by the Tungelroyse Beek.- Ellburg: Situated along the Tungelroyse Beek, this small nature reserve is home to the Ellerschans, a historic refuge fortification. Discovered during the restoration of the Tungelroyse Beek, the Ellerschans consists of a piece of land surrounded by a moat and an inner earthen wall several meters high. It served as a refuge during the Eighty Years' War.Wildlife and FloraThe trail offers opportunities to observe a variety of wildlife, including deer and numerous bird species. The diverse habitats support a rich array of flora, with seasonal wildflowers adding color to the landscape.Historical SignificanceThe Ellerschans in the Ellburg reserve is a notable historical site. This ancient refuge fortification dates back to the Eighty Years' War and was used by local populations as a place of safety during conflicts.
