Loop
“Wander through purple heaths, whispering woodlands, and shimmering wetlands on this enchanting borderland loop.”
Nestled in the tranquil borderlands of the Netherlands and Belgium, this 11 km (about 6.8 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Cartierheide nature reserve, just outside the village of Eersel, North Brabant. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Eindhoven regularly serve Eersel, from where a short taxi or bike ride brings you to the starting point at the Cartierheide parking area on Postelseweg. Drivers will find ample parking at this same location.
Cartierheide: Heathland and History
The route begins by immersing you in the open expanses of Cartierheide, a protected heathland renowned for its sweeping purple heather in late summer and its tranquil, sandy paths year-round. This area is part of the larger De Kempen region, historically significant as a borderland between the Netherlands and Belgium, once frequented by smugglers and traders. The landscape is dotted with Scots pine, birch, and oak, and you may spot grazing sheep, which help maintain the heath’s unique ecosystem.
Pannegoor: Wetlands and Wildlife
After about 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail transitions into the Pannegoor, a mosaic of wetlands and small ponds. This section is a haven for birdwatchers—look for the striking Eurasian curlew, lapwings, and sometimes even the rare black grouse. The wetlands are also home to frogs and dragonflies in the warmer months. Boardwalks and well-maintained paths keep your feet dry, but waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain.
Landgoed Pals: Woodlands and Estate Grounds
At roughly the halfway mark, you enter Landgoed Pals, a historic estate characterized by mixed woodlands and stately avenues of beech and chestnut. The estate’s origins date back to the early 19th century, and while the manor house itself is not open to the public, the grounds are crisscrossed with inviting trails. Keep an eye out for roe deer and red squirrels darting through the undergrowth. The shaded paths here provide a cool respite on sunny days.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire loop is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any seasonal detours or updates. The terrain is predominantly sandy or gravel, with occasional muddy patches in the wetter sections near Pannegoor. Sturdy walking shoes are sufficient for most conditions.
Facilities and Points of Interest
There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the Cartierheide visitor center, which also offers restrooms and information displays about the local flora and fauna. The village of Eersel, just a short drive or cycle away, is known for its charming market square and traditional Brabant hospitality—ideal for a post-hike meal or refreshment.
This loop is a peaceful escape into the varied landscapes of North Brabant, blending heath, wetland, and woodland, with a gentle pace and plenty of natural beauty to enjoy throughout the year.
