Loop
“Wander through blooming purple heather, ancient dikes, and grazing sheep on this tranquil Drenthe loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of the village of Dwingeloo, near the well-known Dwingelderveld National Park in Drenthe, the Nieuwe Dijk and Drenthepad Loop offers a gentle 15 km (about 9.3 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with parking available near the Dwingeloo visitor center, or by public transport via bus connections from Hoogeveen or Assen to Dwingeloo village.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER provides detailed mapping and GPS tracking for the entire loop. The flat terrain ensures you won’t face any strenuous climbs, and the well-maintained paths are suitable for both walking and light cycling.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
The loop traverses the heart of Dwingelderveld National Park, the largest wet heathland in Western Europe. Early on, you’ll pass through expansive heath fields, which burst into purple bloom in late summer. Keep an eye out for grazing sheep, a traditional sight in this region, and the rare black grouse, which sometimes makes an appearance in the quieter stretches. The park is also home to cranes, roe deer, and a variety of butterflies and dragonflies, especially near the fens and ponds scattered along the route.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll reach the Nieuwe Dijk, a historic dike that once played a crucial role in local water management. Interpretive signs explain how these dikes protected the surrounding farmland from flooding and helped shape the landscape you see today. Continuing along the Drenthepad, you’ll skirt ancient peat bogs and pass by remnants of prehistoric burial mounds, known locally as “hunebedden,” which date back over 5,000 years and are a testament to the region’s long human history.
Rest Stops and Facilities
About halfway through the loop, near the village of Lhee, you’ll find a traditional Drenthe farmhouse café, perfect for a rest and a taste of local specialties like Drentse krentenwegge (currant bread). Public toilets and water refill points are available at the Dwingelderveld visitor center and at several picnic spots along the route.
Seasonal Considerations and Trail Conditions
The trail is open year-round, but spring and late summer are particularly beautiful, with wildflowers and heather in bloom. Paths can become muddy after heavy rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended outside the summer months. The open heathland offers little shade, so sun protection is essential on clear days.
Access and Transport
To reach the starting point, take a train to Hoogeveen or Assen, then transfer to a regional bus to Dwingeloo. From the village center, it’s a short walk to the visitor center and trailhead. For drivers, parking is available at the Dwingelderveld National Park visitor center, located at Benderse 22, 7991 CN Dwingeloo.
With its blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and historical intrigue, this loop is a quintessential Drenthe experience, ideal for a relaxed day hike.
