Loop
“Wander through whispering woods and graceful estate grounds, where every season paints its own vibrant scene.”
Begin your walk at the edge of Kluivingsbos, just outside the village of Eelde, a short drive south of Groningen. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Hoofdweg and Burgemeester Legroweg, making it accessible by car with parking available nearby. For those using public transport, buses from Groningen Central Station regularly stop at Eelde, with a brief walk leading you to the start.
Woodland Paths and Estate Grounds
The first section of the loop leads you into Kluivingsbos, a tranquil woodland known for its tall oaks and beech trees. The forest floor is often carpeted with moss and wildflowers in spring, and the flat terrain—no more than a few feet (0 m) of elevation gain—makes for an easy stroll suitable for all fitness levels. Keep an eye out for native birdlife, including woodpeckers and songbirds, and, if you’re lucky, roe deer grazing in the early morning.
After about 3 km (1.9 miles), the path transitions from dense woodland to the open, manicured grounds of Landgoed De Braak. This historic estate, designed in the 19th century by landscape architect Lucas Pieters Roodbaard, features winding lanes, ornamental ponds, and a striking neoclassical villa. The estate’s name, “De Braak,” refers to the marshy land that was transformed into this picturesque parkland. Pause to admire the old ice cellar and the romantic bridges that cross the estate’s waterways.
Navigating the Route
The loop is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check your progress. The trail is mostly on wide, well-maintained paths, with occasional sections of soft ground after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially in wetter months.
Flora, Fauna, and Points of Interest
As you continue, the landscape alternates between shaded forest and open meadows. In summer, the meadows are alive with butterflies and bees, while autumn brings a vibrant display of foliage. The area is also home to several species of bats, which can sometimes be seen at dusk near the estate’s ponds.
At roughly the halfway point, you’ll pass close to the village of Paterswolde, where you can detour for refreshments at a local café. The route then loops back through more woodland, offering a peaceful, shaded return to your starting point.
Getting There
By car, follow signs to Eelde from Groningen, and park near Hoofdweg or Burgemeester Legroweg. For public transport, take a bus from Groningen Central Station to Eelde, then walk about 10 minutes to the trailhead.
This easy 12 km (7.5 mile) loop is ideal for a relaxed day out, offering a blend of natural beauty, historical interest, and accessible walking for all ages.
