Loop
“Wander through blooming meadows, past a timeless windmill and tranquil streams in the heart of Gelderland.”
Starting near the village of Ederveen in the heart of the Gelderse Vallei, this 16 km (about 10 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located close to the intersection of Hoofdweg and Buurtlaan West, just outside Ederveen, which is easily reached by car via the N224 or by public transport from Veenendaal-De Klomp train station, followed by a short bus ride or taxi.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The Jufferpad Loop meanders through a patchwork of Dutch farmland, meadows, and small woodland patches, characteristic of the Gelderland province. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, HiiKER provides detailed navigation and offline maps. The flat terrain ensures a relaxed pace, ideal for families, beginners, or anyone seeking a leisurely day outdoors.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At around 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail skirts the edge of the Ederveen windmill, a classic Dutch landmark dating back to the 19th century. This windmill, known locally as "De Zwaluw," is sometimes open to visitors and offers insight into the region’s agricultural history. Continuing on, the path weaves through open fields where you may spot grazing sheep and cattle, and in spring, the meadows burst with wildflowers.
Halfway through the loop, near the 8 km (5 mile) mark, the route passes close to the Lunterse Beek, a small stream bordered by willow trees and reeds. This area is a haven for birdlife, including herons, storks, and various songbirds. Keep an eye out for roe deer in the early morning or late afternoon, especially near the wooded sections.
Nature and Wildlife
The Gelderse Vallei is known for its rich biodiversity. The flat, open landscape supports a variety of flora and fauna. In addition to birds and deer, you might encounter hares darting across the fields and, in wetter areas, frogs and newts. The hedgerows and small copses provide shelter for foxes and badgers, though these are more elusive.
Historical Significance
The region around Ederveen has a long agricultural tradition, with evidence of farming dating back to medieval times. The landscape you traverse has been shaped by centuries of land reclamation and water management, a hallmark of Dutch ingenuity. The presence of old farmhouses and the windmill along the route are reminders of this enduring relationship between people and land.
Getting There and Facilities
For those arriving by car, parking is available near the intersection of Hoofdweg and Buurtlaan West. Public transport users can take a train to Veenendaal-De Klomp and connect via local bus to Ederveen; from there, it’s a short walk to the trailhead. Facilities along the route are limited, so bring sufficient water and snacks. There are benches at intervals for rest, particularly near the windmill and along the Lunterse Beek.
The Jufferpad Loop is a quintessential Dutch countryside walk, offering a peaceful escape with plenty of natural and cultural highlights, all easily navigable with HiiKER.
