Loop
“Wander through blooming heath, ancient woodlands, and sweeping vistas, where history and nature dance together.”
Starting from the edge of Otterlo, a small village on the border of the Hoge Veluwe National Park in the Netherlands, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main entrance to the park, close to the well-known Kröller-Müller Museum, which is a significant landmark and easy to find whether arriving by car or public transport. Buses from Ede-Wageningen or Arnhem train stations stop at Otterlo, and there is ample parking available for those driving.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route circles through the Oud Reemsterhei, a classic Dutch heathland, and passes by the Observatiepunt, a popular viewpoint that offers sweeping vistas over the open landscape. The terrain is predominantly sandy paths and wide, grassy tracks, with occasional stretches through pine and deciduous woodland. Navigation is straightforward, with clear waymarking throughout, but for added confidence and route tracking, HiiKER provides an accurate digital map of the loop.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Oud Reemsterhei Heathland After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail opens onto the Oud Reemsterhei, a vast expanse of heath that bursts into purple bloom in late summer. This area is a haven for birdlife, including skylarks and stonechats, and you may spot roe deer grazing at dawn or dusk. The heath is also dotted with juniper bushes and ancient oak trees, remnants of the region’s historical landscape management.
- Observatiepunt (Observation Point) At roughly the halfway mark, the Observatiepunt provides a raised platform with panoramic views across the heath. This spot is ideal for a rest and some birdwatching—binoculars are recommended. Interpretive panels explain the unique ecology of the Veluwe and the efforts to preserve its biodiversity.
- Historical Context The Veluwe region has a rich history, shaped by centuries of sheep grazing and sand drift. The trail passes several old sheepfolds and information boards detail the traditional land use that created the open heath. During World War II, the area was used for military exercises, and some old bunkers and trenches can still be seen just off the main path.
Flora and Fauna
Spring and summer bring a profusion of wildflowers, including orchids and gentians, while autumn is marked by colorful fungi and the rutting calls of red deer in the distance. The sandy soils support rare reptiles like the smooth snake and sand lizard, and the woods are home to woodpeckers and tawny owls.
Getting There and Practical Tips
To reach the trailhead, take bus 106 or 108 from Ede-Wageningen or Arnhem train stations to Otterlo, then walk about 10 minutes to the park entrance near the Kröller-Müller Museum. For drivers, set your navigation to Houtkampweg 6, Otterlo, which is the main entrance to the Hoge Veluwe National Park. There is a small entrance fee for the park, and bicycles can be rented at the gate if you wish to explore further after your hike.
The loop is suitable for all fitness levels, with well-maintained paths and no significant climbs. Bring water and snacks, as there are limited facilities once you leave the village. Dogs are allowed on a leash, and the open landscape means weather can change quickly, so pack a windproof jacket. For route details and offline navigation, download the trail map from HiiKER before setting out.
