Loop
“Wander beech-lined paths, ancient forests, and blooming heathlands where history and wildlife color each step.”
The Nieuw Reemst and Oud Reemsterhei Loop is a scenic 9-kilometer (approximately 5.6-mile) circular trail located near Otterlo in the Gelderland province of the Netherlands. With minimal elevation gain, this easy hike offers a diverse landscape of forests, heathlands, and historical agricultural fields.
Getting There
The trailhead is accessible by both car and public transport. For those driving, parking is available at Restaurant Planken Wambuis, located at Verlengde Arnhemseweg 146, 6718 SM Ede. Alternatively, parking is available at the nearby Oud Reemst Otterlo parking area at Planken Wambuisweg 1a, 6718 SP Ede. If you're using public transportation, the nearest bus stop is Oud-Reemsterweg, approximately 150 meters from the trail's starting point.
Trail Overview
Starting from the parking area, the trail leads you through the Planken Wambuis nature reserve, renowned for its varied landscapes and rich biodiversity. The initial segment takes you along the Oud Reemsterlaan, a picturesque path lined with multiple rows of beech trees. These avenues were planted by Jan van Pallandt, whose family also established forests on previously barren parts of the area.
Het Oude Hout Forest
Continuing along the Nieuw Beemsterlaan, you'll enter Het Oude Hout, a forest area dating back to the Middle Ages. Originally spanning about 100 hectares, it now covers approximately 50 hectares. The forest floor is abundant with bracken ferns, indicating areas where the forest has receded. Historically, this was an oak coppice forest used for producing branches. Around 1900, maintaining such a forest became unprofitable, leading managers to allow a single branch from each oak to grow vertically, resulting in the current spire-like trees. The root systems of these oaks are centuries older than their trunks and canopies. If you maintain a quiet presence, you might spot deer, roe deer, and wild boars in this area.
Nieuw Reemst Agricultural Fields
The trail then leads to Nieuw Reemst, a former agricultural enclave featuring sheepfolds. The open plain adjacent to the path was a cultivated field until the late 1980s. Due to the poor soil quality, crop yields here were historically low. Today, this area is managed to preserve its natural state, offering hikers a glimpse into the region's agricultural past.
Oud-Reemsterhei Heathlands
As you proceed, you'll traverse the Oud-Reemsterhei, an expansive heathland characterized by rolling hills and open vistas. This section provides opportunities to observe diverse flora and fauna, including various bird species and, if you're fortunate, larger wildlife like red deer. The heathland is particularly vibrant during late summer when the heather blooms, painting the landscape in shades of purple.
Wildlife Observation Points
Along the route, there are designated wildlife observation posts where you can quietly observe the area's inhabitants. These spots are ideal for birdwatching and may offer sightings of wild boars, red deer, and other native species. Remember to maintain a respectful distance and minimize noise to avoid disturbing the wildlife.
Historical Significance
The region holds historical significance, with remnants of ancient agricultural practices and forest management techniques evident throughout the landscape. The beech avenues and managed forests reflect centuries-old land use patterns, while the heathlands and open fields tell stories of past farming endeavors. Additionally, the area was affected during World War II, and memorials along the trail commemorate events such as the September 1944 aircraft crash, marked by the "Per ardua ad astra" monument.
Trail Conditions and Recommendations
The paths are well-maintained and primarily consist of half-hardened surfaces, making them suitable for hikers of all levels. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after periods of heavy rain, as some sections may become muddy. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash to protect the local wildlife. Be aware of ticks and oak processionary caterpillars, particularly during warmer months. Picnic benches are available along the route, providing pleasant spots to rest and enjoy the surroundings.
