Loop
“Wander beneath grand beech canopies and past ancient mills as Ede’s vibrant past unfolds at every turn.”
Embarking on the Landgoed Kernhem and Doesburger via Pete Weg hike offers a delightful journey through the rich tapestry of Ede's natural beauty and historical landmarks. This approximately 8-kilometer (5-mile) loop is predominantly flat, making it accessible for hikers of all levels.
Starting Point and Access
The hike commences at Landgoed Kernhem, located at Kernhemseweg 7, 6718 ZB Ede. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the estate. If you're using public transportation, Ede-Wageningen train station is the nearest major hub. From there, local buses or a short taxi ride can bring you to the starting point.
Trail Overview
Beginning at the stately Huis Kernhem, a classicist mansion dating back to 1803, the trail meanders through the estate's well-preserved beech avenues. These avenues are characteristic of the French landscape style and provide a serene canopy for hikers. As you progress, you'll encounter the Doolhoflaan, a historic lane that once featured a labyrinth and now serves as a habitat for various bat species.
Edese Bos and Historical Features
The path leads into the Edese Bos, a mixed forest of deciduous and coniferous trees. Within this forest, remnants of an 18th-century labyrinth and a Bronze Age burial mound, known as a hunebed, can be found, offering glimpses into the area's ancient past. The trail continues along the Woutersweg and Peteweg, traditional sandy roads flanked by stately villas, reflecting the region's historical affluence.
Doesburger Eng and Doesburgermolen
Exiting the forest, the route traverses the Doesburger Eng, a picturesque agricultural landscape. Here, you'll encounter the Doesburgermolen, a wooden post mill dating back to around 1620. This mill is among the oldest still-standing windmills in the Netherlands and serves as a testament to the country's rich milling history.
Landgoed Zonneoord and Return Path
The hike also passes through Landgoed Zonneoord, historically a sanatorium and now a center for health and nature studies. The estate's winding forest paths lead back towards Landgoed Kernhem, completing the loop.
Navigation and Preparation
For detailed navigation and trail maps, consider using HiiKER, which provides comprehensive information on this route. Given the trail's easy rating and minimal elevation gain, standard hiking attire and footwear are suitable. However, it's advisable to carry water and snacks, as amenities along the route are limited.
This hike offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue, making it a rewarding experience for those exploring the Ede region.
