“Wander through blooming heaths, tranquil lakes, and storied landscapes where nature and history beautifully entwine.”
Embarking on the Kreelse Plas and Valenberg via Vogelpad offers a captivating 14-kilometer (approximately 8.7 miles) journey through the diverse landscapes of the Veluwe region in the Netherlands. With minimal elevation gain, this easy loop trail is suitable for hikers of all levels.
Starting Point and Access
The hike begins at Natuurcentrum Veluwe, located at Groot Ginkelseweg 2a in Ede. For those using public transportation, nearby bus stops include Langenberg and De Bosrand in Ede. If arriving by car, parking is available at the nature center.
Trail Highlights
- Ginkelse Heide: Shortly after setting out, you'll traverse the expansive Ginkelse Heide, a heathland renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance. During World War II, this area was a key site for Operation Market Garden, where hundreds of Allied paratroopers landed. Each year, commemorative events reenact these landings, honoring the region's rich history.
- Kreelse Plas and Plas van Gent: Approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the serene Kreelse Plas and the nearby Plas van Gent. These vennetjes, or small lakes, are remnants of ancient peat excavations and now serve as habitats for diverse bird species, including the elusive kingfisher. The surrounding wetlands are particularly vibrant during spring and early summer, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching.
- Valenberg Observation Point: Around the 7-kilometer (4.3 miles) mark, the trail ascends gently to the Valenberg, standing at 51 meters (167 feet) above sea level. This vantage point provides panoramic views over the Veluwe, with clear days revealing landmarks such as the radio tower of Ugchelen and the Jachthuis Sint Hubertus. The area is also known for its diverse wildlife; keep an eye out for wild boar, red deer, and, since 2019, resident wolf packs.
- Mossel Farm: Midway through the hike, you'll reach the historic Mossel Farm, now operating as a charming teahouse. This is an ideal spot to rest and enjoy local refreshments. The farm's history dates back to when it was a central part of the local agricultural community, and its rustic ambiance offers a glimpse into the region's past.
Trail Navigation and Considerations
The route is well-marked with blue clogs, characteristic of the Klompenpaden network. For detailed navigation and to enhance your hiking experience, consider using HiiKER, which provides comprehensive maps and trail information. While the trail is predominantly flat, some sections may become muddy after rainfall, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash, especially in areas where livestock graze.
Flora and Fauna
The trail meanders through a mosaic of heathlands, forests, and wetlands. Depending on the season, you might witness blooming heather, a variety of wildflowers, and an array of bird species. The region's biodiversity is a testament to the successful conservation efforts in the Veluwe.
Historical Significance
Beyond its natural beauty, the area is steeped in history. The Ginkelse Heide's role in World War II is commemorated annually, and the presence of ancient burial mounds along the trail speaks to human habitation dating back thousands of years. These historical elements add depth to the hiking experience, connecting you to the region's rich past.
This hike offers a harmonious blend of natural splendor and historical intrigue, making it a must-experience for those exploring the Veluwe.
