Loop
“Wander through ancient burial mounds and blooming heath, where history and wild beauty quietly intertwine.”
Nestled in the heart of the Veluwe, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the N310 road, just outside the village of Otterlo, with the closest significant landmark being the entrance to the Hoge Veluwe National Park. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Ede-Wageningen or Apeldoorn stop at Otterlo, from where it’s a short walk to the trailhead. Drivers will find ample parking near the park entrance.
Ancient Burial Mounds and Open Heath
The route is renowned for its passage through the Grafheuvels, or burial mounds, which date back to the Bronze Age. These low, grassy mounds are scattered across the heath and forest, offering a glimpse into the area’s prehistoric past. Interpretive signs along the way provide context about the people who built these mounds and their significance in Dutch archaeological history.
Heathland, Forest, and Wildlife
After leaving the burial mounds, the trail opens onto Het Wijde Veld, a broad expanse of heathland that bursts into purple bloom in late summer. The open landscape is dotted with juniper bushes and solitary pines, and it’s not uncommon to spot roe deer grazing at dawn or dusk. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for woodlarks, tree pipits, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead.
The path then meanders into mixed woodland, where the sandy soil supports a mix of Scots pine, oak, and birch. Fallen logs and mossy clearings provide habitat for red squirrels and a variety of fungi, especially in autumn. The forest is tranquil, with well-marked trails and occasional benches for rest.
Mechelsche Kuil and Navigation
Approaching the halfway point, the trail skirts the Mechelsche Kuil, a large sandy depression formed by wind erosion centuries ago. This natural amphitheater is a striking feature, often used for outdoor events and a favorite spot for a quiet picnic. The sandy slopes are fun for children to explore, and the open space offers panoramic views of the surrounding heath.
Navigation is straightforward, with clear waymarking throughout the loop. For those who prefer digital navigation, the entire route is available on HiiKER, which provides GPS guidance and up-to-date trail conditions.
Practical Tips
The terrain is mostly sandy paths and heath tracks, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be soft. There are no significant climbs, and the total elevation gain is negligible, making this a relaxed outing suitable for families and casual walkers. Bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities directly on the trail, though cafés and restrooms are available in Otterlo.
This loop is a perfect introduction to the Veluwe’s unique blend of history, nature, and open landscapes, with easy access and plenty to discover along the way.
