Loop
“Wander through blooming heather, whispering woods, and ancient sands on this gentle, enchanting Drenthe loop.”
Starting from the tranquil outskirts near Lhee, just outside the village of Dwingeloo in Drenthe, this 11 km (about 6.8 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk through some of the Netherlands’ most enchanting heathlands and forests, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy, scenic day out. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available near the Lheebroekerzand nature reserve entrance. For those using public transport, buses from Assen or Hoogeveen stop at Dwingeloo, from where it’s a short walk or cycle to the starting point.
Heathlands and Sand Dunes: Zandveen and Lheebroekerzand
The first section leads you into the Zandveen, a mosaic of open heath, shifting sands, and scattered birch trees. This area is especially striking in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple. Keep an eye out for grazing sheep, a traditional method of landscape management here. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the path transitions into the Lheebroekerzand, a unique sand drift landscape shaped by centuries of wind and grazing. The sandy patches and sparse pine groves are remnants of historical overgrazing and woodcutting, giving the area a wild, almost otherworldly feel.
Woodlands and Wetlands: Witte Veen and Schurenberg
Continuing west, the trail enters the Witte Veen, a serene wetland area dotted with small pools and reed beds. This is a haven for birdlife—look for marsh harriers, reed warblers, and, if you’re lucky, a glimpse of the rare black grouse. Boardwalks and well-maintained paths keep your feet dry as you skirt the edges of these wetlands. Around the halfway mark, you’ll reach Schurenberg, a gently rolling woodland with a mix of oak, beech, and pine. The forest floor is carpeted with moss and ferns, and in spring, wood anemones and bluebells add a splash of color.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
This region is steeped in history. The sand drifts of Lheebroekerzand are a living reminder of medieval land use, when local farmers’ sheep and woodcutting practices transformed the landscape. Near the route, you’ll find ancient burial mounds—some dating back to the Bronze Age—hidden among the trees. Interpretive signs along the way provide insight into the area’s natural and cultural heritage.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The loop is well-marked, but for added confidence and route planning, use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. The terrain is mostly sandy or forest paths, suitable for sturdy walking shoes but not technical footwear. There are no significant climbs, making it accessible for families and less experienced hikers. Facilities are limited along the route, so bring water and snacks. The nearest cafes and restrooms are in Dwingeloo, a charming village worth a visit before or after your hike.
Wildlife is abundant—roe deer, foxes, and a variety of birds are commonly seen, especially in the quieter early morning or late afternoon hours. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in sensitive nature areas.
This loop offers a peaceful escape into Drenthe’s diverse landscapes, blending open heath, ancient sand dunes, tranquil wetlands, and shady forests, all within a short journey from the nearest town.
