Loop
“Wander through whispering pines, purple heather, and timeless meadows on this enchanting North Brabant loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Helvoirt, a charming village in North Brabant, the Varkensbos, De Tolberg and Helvoirtsche Loop offers a gentle 13 km (about 8 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Torenstraat and Kastanjelaan, just a short walk from the village center.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Helvoirt is served by regular bus routes connecting from ’s-Hertogenbosch and Tilburg. The nearest bus stop is “Helvoirt, Kerk,” only a few minutes’ walk from the trailhead. If traveling by car, parking is available near the village church or along Kastanjelaan, providing easy access to the start of the loop.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route meanders through a patchwork of serene woodlands, open heath, and agricultural fields. Hikers are encouraged to use HiiKER for precise navigation, as the loop includes several intersecting paths and forest tracks that can be confusing without a reliable map.
Highlights Along the Route
*Varkensbos Forest (0–4 km / 0–2.5 miles)* The first section leads into the Varkensbos, a tranquil forest known for its tall pines and occasional stands of oak and beech. Early morning hikers may spot roe deer or hear the drumming of woodpeckers. The forest floor is often carpeted with moss and, in spring, dotted with wildflowers.
*De Tolberg Heath and Farmland (4–9 km / 2.5–5.5 miles)* Emerging from the woods, the trail skirts the edge of De Tolberg, an area of open heathland interspersed with sandy tracks and low shrubs. This section is particularly scenic in late summer when the heather blooms in shades of purple. Look out for skylarks and, with luck, the rare sand lizard basking on sun-warmed patches. The route also passes by traditional Dutch farmland, where you might see grazing sheep and historic farmhouses.
*Helvoirtsche Broek and Return (9–13 km / 5.5–8 miles)* The final stretch traverses the Helvoirtsche Broek, a low-lying meadowland that can be marshy after rain. This area is rich in birdlife, especially during migration seasons. The path winds back toward Helvoirt, passing close to the village’s 15th-century St. Nicolaaskerk, a striking brick church that stands as a reminder of the region’s medieval history.
Nature and Wildlife
Throughout the hike, expect to encounter a variety of habitats supporting diverse flora and fauna. The forests shelter foxes and badgers, while the open heath and meadows attract butterflies, dragonflies, and a range of songbirds. Binoculars are recommended for birdwatchers, especially in the wetter sections near Helvoirtsche Broek.
Historical Significance
Helvoirt and its surroundings have a rich history, with evidence of settlement dating back to the Middle Ages. The area’s old farmsteads and the prominent St. Nicolaaskerk reflect centuries of rural life and religious tradition. The landscape itself, shaped by centuries of agriculture and forestry, tells the story of North Brabant’s evolving relationship with nature.
Preparation Tips
With a total distance of 13 km (8 miles) and no significant elevation gain, this loop is suitable for families and casual hikers. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections may be muddy. There are limited facilities along the route, so bring water and snacks. Helvoirt offers several cafés and shops for refreshments before or after your hike.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER to ensure you stay on track, as some forest paths are unmarked. The trail is enjoyable year-round, but spring and late summer offer the most vibrant scenery.
