Loop
“Stroll through blooming heather, whispering pines, and ancient stones on this peaceful Drenthe adventure.”
Starting from the tranquil woodlands near Gieten, this 17 km (about 10.5 miles) loop through Boswachterij Gieten-Borger and Hemelrijk offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the N34 road, close to the village of Gieten, which is easily reached by bus from Assen or Groningen. If arriving by car, parking is available at the main Boswachterij Gieten-Borger entrance, just off the N34 at the Gieten exit.
Woodland and Heathland Landscapes
The route quickly immerses you in the serene pine and deciduous forests of the Drenthe region. Early on, you’ll notice the transition from dense woodland to open heathland, especially around the 3 km (1.9 mile) mark. This area is particularly striking in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple. Keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds such as woodpeckers and nuthatches. The sandy soils and scattered juniper bushes are characteristic of the region’s glacial history, shaped during the last Ice Age.
Hemelrijk and Prehistoric Heritage
Around 7 km (4.3 miles) into the hike, you’ll reach the Hemelrijk area, a highlight known for its rolling sand dunes and tranquil ponds. This section is a haven for dragonflies and amphibians, and the open landscape offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching. The trail skirts several ancient burial mounds, or ‘hunebedden’, remnants of the Funnelbeaker culture that settled here over 5,000 years ago. The largest of these, Hunebed D10, is located just off the trail near Bronneger, about 10 km (6.2 miles) from the start. These megalithic tombs are among the oldest monuments in the Netherlands and provide a fascinating glimpse into the region’s prehistoric past.
Navigating the Loop
The path is well-marked and maintained, with clear signage at major junctions. For precise navigation, the HiiKER app offers detailed offline maps and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track even in the denser forest sections. The loop is mostly on wide, sandy tracks and forest paths, with occasional stretches on quiet rural roads. There are several picnic spots along the way, particularly near the Hemelrijk ponds and at the forest edges, ideal for a rest or lunch break.
Practical Information
Public transport users can take a bus from Assen or Groningen to Gieten, with the nearest stop at Gieten, Brink, about a 10-minute walk from the trailhead. For drivers, the Boswachterij Gieten-Borger parking area is signposted from the N34 and offers ample space. There are no significant climbs, with total elevation gain less than 10 metres (33 feet), so the route is suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed day out. Facilities are limited along the trail, so bring sufficient water and snacks. The nearest cafes and shops are in Gieten and Borger, both accessible by a short detour.
This loop is a peaceful journey through one of Drenthe’s most scenic and historically rich landscapes, blending natural beauty with traces of ancient human activity.
