Loop
“Wander through blooming heather, ancient estates, and sunlit woodlands for a tranquil Dutch escape.”
Nestled in the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, this 8 km (5 miles) loop weaves through the serene landscapes of Klein Heidestein, Groot Heidestein, and Landgoed Bornia, offering a gentle walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near Driebergseweg, close to the town of Zeist, making it easily accessible whether arriving by car or public transport. From Utrecht Centraal, frequent buses run to Zeist, with stops near the entrance to the Heidestein estates; drivers can find parking at the main entrance on Driebergseweg.
Getting Started and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, HiiKER provides a detailed digital map of the loop, ensuring you stay on track through the varied terrain. The path is mostly wide and sandy, with occasional forested stretches and open heathland, making it suitable for families, casual walkers, and those with limited mobility.
Heathlands and Forests
Shortly after setting out, the trail opens onto the expansive heathlands of Groot Heidestein. In late summer, the heather blooms in vibrant purple, attracting butterflies and bees. The area is home to grazing sheep, which help maintain the landscape, and you may spot roe deer or foxes darting between the trees at dawn or dusk. The sandy soil and scattered juniper bushes are characteristic of this region, shaped by centuries of grazing and land management.
Historical Estates and Wildlife
At around 3 km (1.9 miles), the path enters the historic estate of Klein Heidestein. This area was once part of a larger network of country estates developed by wealthy Utrecht families in the 19th century. Remnants of old carriageways and stately avenues are still visible, and interpretive signs along the route provide insight into the estate’s history. The mixed woodland here is rich in birdlife, including woodpeckers, nuthatches, and tawny owls. Keep an eye out for ancient Scots pines and the occasional badger sett.
Landgoed Bornia and Sand Dunes
The loop continues into Landgoed Bornia, a striking contrast with its rolling sand dunes and open pine forests. This section, around 5 km (3.1 miles) into the hike, is a favorite for nature photographers and those seeking a quiet spot for a picnic. The shifting sands are a reminder of the area’s glacial past, and the sparse vegetation supports rare insects and lizards.
Practical Tips
There are no significant climbs or descents, with elevation gain negligible—less than 10 metres (33 feet) over the entire route. The trail is mostly unpaved, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when sandy patches can become slippery. Benches are scattered throughout, and there are several information boards detailing the flora, fauna, and history of the estates.
Restrooms and refreshments are available at the main entrance near Driebergseweg, and Zeist town center is a short bus ride or drive away for post-hike meals or supplies. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife and grazing animals.
This loop offers a peaceful escape into one of the Netherlands’ most beautiful heath and woodland landscapes, with easy access, rich biodiversity, and a fascinating glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage.
