Loop
“Stroll beneath stately trees and castle shadows, where history, wildflowers, and tranquil fields entwine.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Zeist, just a short walk from the well-known Slot Zeist castle, this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy day out. The trailhead is easily accessible: from Utrecht Centraal, take a direct bus or train to Zeist, then follow local signs or use HiiKER for precise navigation to Slot Zeist, a stately 17th-century palace that marks the beginning of your journey.
Slot Zeist and Historical Surroundings The route begins at Slot Zeist, a grand baroque estate surrounded by manicured gardens and tree-lined avenues. Built in the late 1600s, the castle has served as a residence for nobility and, later, as a cultural center. Take a moment to admire the ornate gates and symmetrical landscaping before heading east into the quieter residential lanes and green corridors that define the outskirts of Zeist.
Blikkenburg Estate and Woodland Paths Within the first 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll pass the Blikkenburg estate, a historic manor set amid lush meadows and old-growth trees. The estate grounds are dotted with ancient oaks and beech trees, and in spring, carpets of wildflowers. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional red squirrel darting through the branches. The trail here is wide and well-maintained, making it suitable for families and casual walkers.
De Rumpst and Open Fields Continuing south, the path meanders through De Rumpst, a patchwork of open fields and hedgerows. This section, around 5 km (3 miles) into the hike, is known for its tranquil farmland vistas and the chance to spot grazing sheep and horses. The flat terrain and open skies make it a favorite for birdwatchers—look for kestrels hovering above the fields and, in summer, swallows swooping low over the grass.
Return via Zeist’s Green Belt The final stretch loops back toward Zeist through a series of interconnected parks and wooded lanes. At around 9 km (5.5 miles), you’ll re-enter the town’s green belt, passing small ponds and community gardens. The route is well-signposted, but HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to ensure you stay on the correct paths, especially where trails intersect.
Practical Information There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near Blikkenburg and in the parks closer to Zeist. Public toilets and cafés can be found near the start and end points, especially around Slot Zeist. The entire loop is on well-maintained paths, suitable for walking shoes or trainers, and is accessible year-round. For those arriving by car, parking is available at Slot Zeist, while public transport users will find frequent connections from Utrecht and Amersfoort.
This loop is ideal for anyone seeking a relaxed walk through a blend of historical estates, Dutch countryside, and leafy suburban parks, all within easy reach of central Zeist.
