Loop
“Stroll through blossoming orchards, riverside meadows, and centuries-old dikes in storybook Gelderland.”
Nestled in the scenic Dutch province of Gelderland, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Heukelum, with the closest significant landmark being the historic Heukelum Castle. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Gorinchem or Leerdam stop in Heukelum, and parking is available near the village center for those coming by car.
Getting Started and Navigation
The loop begins just outside Heukelum, a charming riverside village known for its medieval roots and the striking Heukelum Castle, which dates back to the 13th century. The castle, though privately owned, is visible from the trail and sets a picturesque tone for the hike. Wittensteinpark: Riverside Meadows and Woodlands
The first section leads you into Wittensteinpark, a tranquil area characterized by lush meadows and patches of woodland. The park is a haven for birdlife, especially in spring and early summer, when you might spot herons, storks, and a variety of songbirds. The flat terrain makes for easy walking, and the well-maintained paths are suitable for families and casual hikers.
Janusplaat: River Views and Wetlands
At around the 2.5 km (1.5 mile) mark, the trail skirts the banks of the Linge River, the longest river entirely within the Netherlands. Here, you’ll encounter Janusplaat, a small island and wetland area that’s rich in biodiversity. The riverbanks are lined with willows and reeds, providing habitat for waterfowl and otters. This section is particularly scenic, with open views across the water and opportunities to spot grazing cattle or wild horses in the adjacent fields.
Zanddijk: Historic Dikes and Open Countryside
Continuing along the loop, you’ll reach Zanddijk, a historic dike that has protected the region from flooding for centuries. Walking atop the dike, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, dotted with traditional Dutch farmhouses and orchards. In spring, the fruit trees burst into blossom, creating a spectacular display. The dike itself is a reminder of the Netherlands’ long history of water management and land reclamation.
Practical Tips and Wildlife
The entire route is flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it ideal for a leisurely walk or a family outing. The paths are mostly unpaved but well-trodden, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain. Bring binoculars for birdwatching, and keep an eye out for hares, deer, and the occasional fox in the fields.
Facilities are limited along the route, but Heukelum offers several cafés and shops for refreshments before or after your hike. The best time to visit is from April to October, when the weather is mild and the landscape is at its most vibrant.
