Loop
“Wander through blooming heath, tranquil wetlands, and storied landscapes where history and nature quietly intertwine.”
Starting from the edge of Doldersum, a small village in the Drenthe province of the Netherlands, this 15 km (about 9.3 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Doldersumseweg and the entrance to the Doldersummerveld, a well-known heathland area. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Steenwijk or Assen stop at Doldersum, and parking is available near the Doldersumseweg for those coming by car.
Heathlands and Forests
The route quickly immerses you in the serene landscapes of the Drents-Friese Wold National Park, one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. The first few kilometers wind through expansive heathlands, especially striking in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple. The open terrain is interspersed with patches of pine and birch forest, providing a mix of sun and shade along the way.
Meeuwenplas and Wetlands
Around the halfway mark, the trail skirts the tranquil Meeuwenplas, a shallow pond surrounded by reeds and marshy grasslands. This area is a haven for birdlife, particularly gulls (meeuwen in Dutch), herons, and sometimes even cranes during migration periods. Benches along the water’s edge offer a perfect spot for a break and birdwatching.
Historical Significance and Landmarks
The region is steeped in history, with the Doldersum monument standing as a poignant reminder of World War II. Near the trail, a memorial stone marks the site where several resistance fighters were executed in 1944. Informational panels provide context about the local resistance and the area’s role during the war. The trail also passes several traditional Drenthe sheepfolds (schaapskooien), reflecting the area’s pastoral heritage.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The loop is well-marked with posts and signs, but for added confidence, the entire route is available on HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and GPS navigation. The terrain is mostly sandy paths and grassy tracks, with occasional boardwalks over wetter sections. Waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain, though the trail is generally dry and easy to follow.
Flora, Fauna, and Seasonal Highlights
Throughout the year, the landscape changes dramatically. Spring brings wildflowers and the return of migratory birds, while autumn is marked by colorful foliage and the presence of grazing sheep. Roe deer, foxes, and a variety of butterflies are commonly spotted, especially in the quieter early morning or late afternoon hours.
This loop offers a peaceful escape into nature, rich with wildlife, history, and the unique beauty of the Dutch heathlands.
