Point-to-Point
“From Hanseatic Doesburg’s river hush to Doetinchem’s bridges, a wind-swept dike daydream onward.”
This is a long, flat, lowland walk of about 24 km (15 miles) with ~0 m (0 ft) of climbing overall—expect dike-top paths, canal/river edges, and a few urban stretches as you thread from historic Doesburg toward Nieuw Gaanderen via Doetinchem landmarks like the Polikliniek and the Europabrug.
A practical “hike head” landmark is the IJsselbrug (N317) at Doesburg—the main bridge over the River IJssel on the edge of town. It’s an obvious, easy-to-find gateway between the river landscape and the old Hanseatic streets.
Plan on 5–6.5 hours of walking time depending on breaks and how much time you spend in Doesburg/Doetinchem. Surfaces are typically: - Paved cycle paths and sidewalks in and around towns - Hard-packed dike tops and towpaths along waterways - Occasional gravel/farm tracks that can be muddy after rain
Because elevation is negligible, the main “difficulty” factors are distance, wind exposure on dikes, and sharing space with cyclists (especially near towns and on popular river paths).
The opening kilometers (roughly 0–3 km / 0–2 miles) are the most atmospheric. Doesburg is a notably well-preserved Hanseatic town with a medieval street pattern and a large number of protected monuments, reflecting its importance in regional trade when river access meant everything. (hanse.org)
As you leave the old centre, the landscape quickly becomes “big sky and water”: the IJssel and its floodplains define the horizon. If your line takes you over/near the IJsselbrug (N317), be alert for: - Fast cycle traffic and narrow shared paths on bridge approaches - Wind gusts funnelling along the river corridor - Noise and spray in wet weather from adjacent traffic lanes
Mid-route you’ll pass into the Doetinchem area, where the walk becomes more urban for a while (roughly 10–18 km / 6–11 miles, depending on your exact line).
Polikliniek landmark (Doetinchem): A clear, navigable reference point is Slingeland’s Polikliniek Dermatologie, Gezellenlaan 10, 7005 AZ Doetinchem—useful as a mid-walk “checkpoint” for timing, snacks, and regrouping. (slingeland.nl)
Europabrug (Doetinchem): You’ll cross the Oude IJssel via the Europabrug, one of the main bridges linking the city centre area across the river. (en.wikipedia.org)
What to watch for here:
- Busy junctions at bridge ends—expect multiple signal phases and turning traffic
- Shared pedestrian/cycle space: hold a predictable line and check behind before stepping sideways for photos
- In rain, bridge decks can feel slick—shorten stride and avoid painted markings
If you detour into Doetinchem Centrum, it’s worth knowing the area was heavily damaged in 1945 during WWII bombing; only fragments of older fortifications remain, and some street names/memorial elements reference what was lost. (en.wikipedia.org)
The final third (roughly 18–24 km / 11–15 miles) eases back into quieter edges—fields, drainage channels, and the characteristic Achterhoek patchwork of hedgerows and farm lanes.
Wildlife is typical of Dutch river-and-farmland mosaics: - Waterfowl (geese, ducks, swans) along
