Loop
“Wander through blooming heath, ancient woodlands, and echoes of history on this scenic Drenthe loop.”
Starting from the edge of the charming village of Schoonloo in the Dutch province of Drenthe, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy day out in nature. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main road through Schoonloo, close to the well-known N376, making it accessible whether arriving by car or public transport. Buses from Assen or Emmen stop at Schoonloo, and there is ample parking available near the village center for those driving.
Navigating the Route
The loop combines three distinct paths: the Haar Weg, the Hunterpad, and the Hoekenbrink. HiiKER provides reliable navigation for the entire route, ensuring you stay on track through the varied landscapes. The paths are well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended, especially as some sections wind through dense woodland and open heath.
Landscapes and Natural Highlights
The first section follows the historic Haar Weg, an ancient track once used by farmers and traders. This part of the trail is lined with old hedgerows and passes through open farmland, offering wide views across the Drenthe countryside. After about 3 km (1.9 miles), the route transitions into the Hunterpad, where the scenery shifts to mixed woodland. Here, mature oaks and pines provide shade, and the forest floor is often carpeted with moss and wildflowers in spring and summer.
Wildlife is abundant throughout the loop. Roe deer are commonly spotted at dawn and dusk, and the area is home to a variety of birds, including woodpeckers, buzzards, and the occasional tawny owl. The trail skirts several small ponds and wetlands, attracting frogs, dragonflies, and, in the right season, a chorus of songbirds.
Hoekenbrink Heath and Historical Significance
Around the halfway point, the path opens onto the Hoekenbrink, a classic Drenthe heathland. This area is particularly striking in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple. The heath is a remnant of the region’s ancient landscape, shaped by centuries of grazing and peat cutting. Interpretive signs along the way explain the cultural history of the heath and its importance to local communities.
The loop also passes near several prehistoric burial mounds, known as “hunebedden,” which are scattered throughout Drenthe. While not directly on the trail, a short detour of about 500 meters (0.3 miles) from the main route brings you to one of these ancient megalithic tombs, offering a glimpse into the area’s Neolithic past.
Trail Conditions and Practical Tips
The entire loop is on well-maintained paths, suitable for walking year-round. Surfaces range from compacted dirt to sandy tracks, with occasional tree roots and muddy patches after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, but hiking boots are not essential unless conditions are particularly wet. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, especially near the Hoekenbrink, making it easy to pause and enjoy the scenery.
Water and refreshments are available in Schoonloo, but there are no facilities directly on the trail, so bring enough supplies for the day. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially in areas where livestock graze or wildlife is present.
For navigation, HiiKER offers detailed maps and waypoints, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience on this scenic and historically rich loop through the heart of Drenthe.
