Out and Back
“Wander through ever-changing dunes, wildflower meadows, and peaceful woods alive with grazing ponies and birdsong.”
Starting from the edge of the Bollekamer nature reserve, just south of Den Hoorn on the island of Texel, this loop trail covers approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers and families. The trailhead is easily reached by taking a local bus from Den Burg or Den Hoorn, with parking available at the Bollekamer car park for those arriving by car.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER is recommended. The trail forms a loop, so you’ll return to your starting point without retracing your steps.
Landscape and Natural Features
The Bollekamer and Hoornderstag Loop traverses a mosaic of Texel’s unique landscapes. Early on, you’ll pass through open dune valleys, where the sandy soil supports a variety of grasses and wildflowers, especially vibrant in spring and early summer. The area is part of the Dunes of Texel National Park, renowned for its shifting sands and dynamic ecosystems.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) in, the trail enters a more wooded section, with pine and oak trees providing shelter for birds such as woodpeckers and nightingales. Keep an eye out for Scottish Highland cattle and Exmoor ponies, which graze here to help maintain the open character of the dunes.
Wildlife and Birdwatching
This region is a hotspot for birdlife, particularly during migration seasons. Marsh harriers, spoonbills, and various waders can often be spotted in the wetter dune slacks. The absence of significant elevation means the walking is gentle, but binoculars are handy for observing wildlife from the trail.
Cultural and Historical Context
The Bollekamer area has a rich history tied to Texel’s agricultural and maritime past. The dunes were once used for grazing sheep, a tradition that continues today. The nearby village of Den Hoorn, with its iconic white church tower, has been a landmark for sailors for centuries and is worth a visit before or after your hike.
Trail Facilities and Tips
There are no facilities directly on the loop, so bring water and snacks. The nearest restrooms and cafés are in Den Hoorn, about 2 km (1.2 miles) from the trailhead. The sandy paths can be soft in places, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash due to grazing livestock and wildlife.
Access and Transport
Public transport users can take bus 28 from Den Burg to Den Hoorn, then walk or cycle to the Bollekamer car park. Drivers can follow signs from Den Hoorn to the Bollekamer parking area, which is the most convenient access point for the loop.
