Loop
“Wander between storied forts and windswept dunes, where sea views and wildflowers paint every step.”
Starting from the outskirts of Den Helder, the Fort Erfprins and Fort Kijkduin Loop is an accessible 8 km (5 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it ideal for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Jan Verfailleweg and the entrance to Fort Erfprins, just a short distance from Den Helder’s city center.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Den Helder’s main train station is well-connected to Amsterdam and other major Dutch cities. From the station, local buses (such as line 31 or 32) head toward Huisduinen, stopping near Jan Verfailleweg. If driving, parking is available near Fort Erfprins or at the larger lot by Fort Kijkduin in Huisduinen.
Route Overview and Navigation
The loop begins by skirting the historic ramparts of Fort Erfprins, the largest fortress in the Netherlands, built in the early 19th century as part of the country’s coastal defenses. The path is mostly paved or well-maintained gravel, with wide, flat stretches suitable for families and casual walkers. Navigation is straightforward, but for precise wayfinding and up-to-date trail conditions, HiiKER is recommended.
Historical Highlights
Fort Erfprins stands as a testament to Napoleonic military engineering, with its star-shaped bastions and deep moats. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the route heads west toward the North Sea, passing through grassy dunes and open fields that once formed part of the fort’s defensive perimeter.
At roughly the halfway point, the trail reaches Fort Kijkduin, perched atop the dunes overlooking the sea. Originally commissioned by Napoleon in 1811, this fort now houses a museum and a North Sea aquarium. The panoramic views from the ramparts stretch across the Wadden Sea and Texel Island.
Nature and Wildlife
Between the forts, the trail meanders through the Helderse Duinen, a protected dune landscape rich in coastal flora. Expect to see sea buckthorn, wild roses, and, in spring and summer, a colorful array of wildflowers. Birdlife is abundant, with kestrels, oystercatchers, and gulls commonly spotted. The area is also frequented by rabbits and, occasionally, foxes.
Points of Interest and Facilities
- Fort Erfprins: Not open to the public, but the exterior and moat are impressive. - Fort Kijkduin: Open to visitors, with exhibitions on local history and marine life. - Huisduinen Lighthouse: A short detour from the loop, this iconic red lighthouse is a popular photo stop. - Cafés and restrooms are available in Huisduinen, near Fort Kijkduin.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
With no significant elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet), the loop is suitable year-round, though wind can be strong along the coast. Waterproof jackets are advisable outside summer months. The route is exposed in places, so sun protection is recommended on clear days. Sturdy walking shoes are sufficient, as the terrain is mostly flat and firm.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER to ensure you stay on track, especially where the trail crosses open dune sections. The entire loop can be completed in 2–2.5 hours at a moderate pace, allowing time to explore the forts and enjoy the coastal scenery.
