Point-to-Point
“From Den Helder’s maritime heart to De Nollen’s artful dunes, this coastal walk bursts with wildlife, wildflowers, and sweeping sea views.”
Starting from the northern tip of Den Helder, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) coastal trek is a gentle, flat journey with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Den Helder train station, a major transport hub easily reached by direct train from Amsterdam and other Dutch cities. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the station and in nearby lots.
Setting Out: Den Helder and the Noord Duinen
The route begins in the maritime city of Den Helder, known for its naval history and proximity to the North Sea. As you leave the urban area, the path quickly transitions into the Noord Duinen, a protected dune landscape that stretches along the coast. These dunes are a haven for wildlife, including rabbits, foxes, and a variety of coastal birds such as oystercatchers and terns. In spring and summer, the dunes are dotted with wildflowers and the salty air is filled with birdsong.
Helderse Zeekering and Coastal Views
After about 5 km (3.1 miles), the trail meets the Helderse Zeekering, the sea defense system that protects Den Helder from the North Sea’s powerful tides. This section offers expansive views over the water and, on clear days, you can spot the island of Texel to the north. The Zeekering is a feat of Dutch engineering, part of the country’s ongoing battle against the sea, and walking here gives a sense of the region’s historical relationship with water management.
Nature and Wildlife
Continuing south, the path hugs the coastline, alternating between sandy tracks and paved sections. The Noordhollands Duinreservaat, a vast dune reserve, is home to grazing Highland cattle and Konik horses, which help maintain the open landscape. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for kestrels and marsh harriers gliding above the grasslands. The area is also rich in butterflies and dragonflies during warmer months.
Approaching De Nollen Camp
The final stretch leads inland toward De Nollen, an area known for its unique landscape art park created by Dutch artist R.W. van de Wint. The park blends natural dune scenery with striking earthworks and sculptures, offering a peaceful and contemplative end to the hike. The camp itself is a short walk from the main road, where local buses connect back to Den Helder or further south to Alkmaar.
Navigation and Preparation
The entire route is well-marked, but for precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this hike suitable for all fitness levels, though sturdy walking shoes are recommended due to occasional sandy or muddy patches. Bring water and snacks, as services are limited once you leave Den Helder. Weather can change quickly along the coast, so pack a windproof jacket even in summer.
Public toilets and cafes are available at the start in Den Helder and near the end at De Nollen, but facilities are sparse along the route. The trail is accessible year-round, though spring and early summer offer the best conditions for wildlife and wildflowers.
