Loop
“Wander from whispering pines to windswept dunes, where history, wildlife, and sea views enchant every step.”
Starting from the edge of De Koog, a charming village on the west coast of Texel, the De Dennen and Ockesnol Loop offers a gentle 8 km (about 5 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main entrance to Nationaal Park Duinen van Texel, just off the N200 road, with parking available at the Bosrandweg car park. For those arriving by public transport, bus line 28 from Den Burg or the ferry terminal stops at De Koog, from where it’s a short walk to the trailhead.
Woodlands and Dune Landscapes
The route quickly immerses you in the tranquil pine forests of De Dennen, planted in the early 20th century to stabilize the shifting sands and provide timber. The scent of pine needles and the soft forest floor underfoot create a peaceful atmosphere, while sunlight filters through the canopy. Keep an eye out for red squirrels darting among the branches and listen for the melodic calls of woodpeckers and songbirds. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail transitions into open dune landscapes, where the wind shapes the sandy hills and marram grass sways in the breeze.
Ockesnol and Coastal Views
Approaching the halfway point, the path leads to Ockesnol, a prominent dune with sweeping views over the North Sea and the Texel dunes. This area is a haven for birdlife, especially during migration seasons, when you might spot spoonbills, oystercatchers, and even the occasional kestrel hovering overhead. The dunes here are dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer, attracting butterflies and bees. The sandy paths can be soft in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
Historical and Natural Highlights
The region’s history is closely tied to the sea and the struggle to reclaim and protect land from encroaching tides. The pine forests were part of a major reforestation effort in the 1920s, and remnants of old bunkers from World War II can be found hidden among the dunes, silent witnesses to Texel’s strategic importance. Interpretive signs along the route provide insights into the area’s natural and cultural history.
Navigation and Facilities
The loop is well-marked with posts and signs, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and track your progress. There are several benches along the way for rest stops, and picnic areas near the forest edge. Public toilets and a café can be found at the Bosrandweg car park and in De Koog village.
With its easy terrain, varied landscapes, and rich wildlife, this loop is ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking to experience the unique beauty of Texel’s dunes and forests.
