Loop
“Wander through wildflowers and wetlands, where history and birdlife paint the West Coast in vibrant hues.”
Starting from the trailhead near the West Coast National Park’s Geelbek Visitor Centre, this loop covers approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most fitness levels and ideal for a leisurely day out. The Geelbek Visitor Centre itself is a historic Cape Dutch building, dating back to the 18th century, and serves as a gateway to the park’s unique blend of coastal, wetland, and fynbos habitats.
Getting There
For those arriving by car, the Geelbek Visitor Centre is well-signposted within the West Coast National Park, just off the R27 highway, about 90 minutes north of Cape Town. Secure parking is available at the visitor centre. Public transport options are limited in this region, so most visitors opt to drive or join organized tours departing from Cape Town.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The loop begins on a well-marked sandy path, easily followed with the help of HiiKER for real-time navigation and waypoints. The route is flat throughout, with a total elevation gain of less than 10 metres (about 33 feet), making it suitable for families and those seeking a gentle walk.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Bleekers Vallei: Early in the hike, the trail skirts the Bleekers Vallei, a tranquil area known for its seasonal wildflowers (especially vibrant from August to September) and birdlife. Keep an eye out for flamingos, avocets, and other waders in the nearby wetlands. - Rovershut: Around the halfway mark, you’ll reach the Rovershut, a rustic shelter that offers a shaded spot to rest and enjoy views over the salt marshes. This hut is a nod to the region’s history of early explorers and cattle herders who traversed these coastal plains. - Fynbos and Wildlife: The path meanders through low coastal fynbos, with interpretive signs highlighting the unique plant species endemic to the Cape Floristic Region. Tortoises, small antelope like steenbok, and a variety of lizards are commonly seen along the way.
Nature and Historical Significance
The West Coast National Park is part of the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its biodiversity and cultural heritage. The Geelbek area has archaeological significance, with evidence of San and Khoi peoples’ habitation dating back thousands of years. The salt pans and wetlands you pass are vital habitats for migratory birds, making this loop a favorite among birdwatchers.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The sandy paths can be exposed to wind and sun, so bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. There are no significant climbs or technical sections, but sturdy walking shoes are recommended due to occasional loose sand. Facilities, including restrooms and a café, are available at the Geelbek Visitor Centre before and after your hike.
Navigation and Safety
Cell coverage is generally good, and the route is well-marked, but always use HiiKER for up-to-date trail information and to track your progress. The loop is safe for solo hikers, but always inform someone of your plans, especially if venturing out during quieter times of the year.
