Loop
“This gentle loop weaves through shimmering lakes, wildflower meadows, and windmill-dotted landscapes near Delft.”
Starting from the edge of Delft, near the well-known Delftse Hout recreation area, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop trail offers a flat, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Delftse Hout car park, which is easily reached by local buses from Delft Central Station or by car, with ample parking available.
Navigating the Route
The route follows a scenic circuit through the heart of South Holland’s green spaces, connecting the tranquil waters of Grote Plas and Dobbeplas via a network of well-marked paths: Molen Weg, Batijpad, Laak Weg, and Strandpad. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track throughout the journey.
Highlights and Landmarks
The first section skirts the shores of Grote Plas, a large lake popular with birdwatchers and waterfowl enthusiasts. Expect to see grebes, herons, and sometimes even kingfishers darting along the reed-lined banks. The path here is wide and well-maintained, with benches and picnic spots offering views across the water.
Continuing along Molen Weg, you’ll pass by the historic windmill, De Roos, a classic Dutch landmark that dates back to the 18th century. This area is rich in history, as Delft and its surroundings have long been shaped by water management and the iconic windmills that helped reclaim land from the sea.
Nature and Wildlife
As you transition onto Batijpad and Laak Weg, the landscape shifts to open meadows and wetlands. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the ditches, and the air is alive with the calls of lapwings and skylarks. The Dobbeplas, another large lake, is a haven for migratory birds and is bordered by reed beds and willow groves. Keep an eye out for hares and, if you’re lucky, the occasional roe deer grazing at dawn or dusk.
Strandpad and Return
The final stretch along Strandpad brings you back toward Delftse Hout, passing through a mix of woodland and open parkland. This section is especially popular with families and cyclists, so be mindful of shared paths. The area is dotted with small playgrounds and cafes, making it a pleasant spot to rest before completing the loop.
Access and Facilities
Public transport from Delft Central Station is frequent, with buses stopping at Delftse Hout or nearby residential areas. For those driving, the Delftse Hout car park is the most convenient starting point. Toilets, cafes, and picnic areas are available at both Delftse Hout and Dobbeplas, making this route well-supported for a leisurely day out.
With its flat terrain, abundant wildlife, and historical landmarks, this trail is ideal for anyone seeking a peaceful escape into the Dutch countryside.
