Loop
“Wander through ancient beech forests, vibrant meadows, and storied hills, where nature and legend entwine.”
Nestled in the scenic region of Overijssel, the Tankenberg and Landgoed Egheria Loop offers a gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near Oldenzaal, with the nearest significant landmark being the Tankenberg hill, the highest natural point in the province at 85 meters above sea level, though the loop itself remains mostly flat.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Oldenzaal railway station is the closest major stop, with regular train connections from Enschede and Hengelo. From the station, local buses or a short taxi ride can bring you to the vicinity of the trailhead near Tankenbergweg. If traveling by car, parking is available at the Landgoed Egheria estate, which is well-signposted from the main roads leading out of Oldenzaal.
Trail Highlights and Navigation
The loop meanders through the lush woodlands and open meadows of Landgoed Egheria, a historic estate known for its stately avenues and diverse flora. Early in the hike, you’ll pass through ancient beech forests, where spring brings carpets of wildflowers and autumn transforms the canopy into a riot of color. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS navigation to keep you on track.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the walk, you’ll encounter the Tankenberg hill itself. While the trail skirts the base, a short detour leads to the summit, offering panoramic views over the Twente countryside. This hill is steeped in legend, believed to be the burial site of the mythical Lady Tanfana, a goddess worshipped by ancient Germanic tribes. The area is dotted with glacial erratics and old boundary stones, remnants of the region’s long history.
Continuing through the estate, you’ll pass the Egheria manor house, a striking example of 19th-century Dutch architecture, surrounded by ornamental gardens and tranquil ponds. Birdlife is abundant here, with woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional buzzard soaring overhead. Deer and foxes are sometimes spotted in the quieter corners of the estate, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
Nature and Wildlife
The varied habitats along the loop support a rich diversity of plant and animal life. In the wetter sections, look for marsh orchids and kingfishers darting along the streams. The drier heathlands are home to rare butterflies and lizards basking on sunny days. The estate’s careful management ensures that both native woodland and open pasture are preserved, providing a haven for wildlife year-round.
Practical Tips
The trail surface is mostly well-maintained gravel and dirt paths, suitable for walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the manor house and at scenic viewpoints. While there are no steep climbs, the paths can be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended in wet weather. Public toilets and a small café can be found at the Landgoed Egheria entrance, making it a convenient spot to start or finish your walk.
