Loop
“Winding through golden dunes and coastal vistas, this loop unveils Texel’s wild beauty and rich history.”
Starting from the edge of De Koog, a lively village on the west coast of Texel, the Ruijslaan and Kogerstrand Loop offers a gentle 11 km (about 6.8 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main entrance to National Park Dunes of Texel, just off Ruijslaan, a short walk from the village center and the well-known Kogerstrand campsite.
Getting There De Koog is easily reached by public transport from Den Helder, the mainland ferry terminal. After crossing to Texel by ferry, local buses (line 28) connect the ferry port to De Koog, with stops near the trailhead. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the large lot near the National Park entrance on Ruijslaan, close to the Ecomare nature museum.
Dune Landscapes and Coastal Views The loop quickly immerses you in the shifting dune landscapes that define Texel’s western shore. Wide sandy paths wind through rolling dunes covered in marram grass and sea buckthorn, with occasional glimpses of the North Sea. The route is almost entirely flat, with elevation changes of less than a meter (3 feet), making it ideal for a relaxed walk or family outing.
At around 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail skirts the edge of the Kogerstrand campsite, a popular spot for summer visitors. Here, you’ll find access points to the broad sandy beach—perfect for a detour to dip your toes in the sea or watch shorebirds feeding along the tide line.
Nature and Wildlife The dunes are home to a rich variety of wildlife. Look for rabbits darting through the undergrowth and, in spring and summer, listen for the calls of skylarks and meadow pipits overhead. The area is also a haven for butterflies and, with luck, you might spot a common lizard basking on a sunny patch of sand.
Historical Significance Texel’s dunes have a long history of human use, from ancient settlements to World War II bunkers hidden among the grasses. Near the halfway point, at about 5.5 km (3.4 miles), you’ll pass close to the Ecomare nature center, which offers exhibits on the island’s natural and cultural history. The dunes themselves have been shaped by centuries of grazing, sand drift, and coastal defense efforts.
Navigation and Facilities The route is well-marked with local signage, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the loop and track your progress. Benches are scattered along the way, especially near the beach access points, and there are several picnic spots with views over the dunes. Public toilets and refreshments are available in De Koog and at Ecomare.
Finishing the loop, the trail returns you to the starting point near the National Park entrance, just a short stroll from De Koog’s shops and cafes—perfect for a post-hike treat.
