Trailhead and Access
The Houtenbakje and Monniken Weg Loop is a scenic 7-kilometer (approximately 4.35 miles) trail with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Bakkeveen in Friesland, Netherlands. For those traveling by car, parking is available at the Tourist Transfer Point (Toeristisch Overstap Punt, TOP) situated at Mjûmster Wei 16, 9243 SK Bakkeveen. If you're using public transportation, bus services connect to Bakkeveen, with the nearest stop being Bakkeveen, Tsjerkewâl, just a short walk from the trailhead.
Trail Overview
Starting from the parking area, the trail leads you into the Bakkeveensterduinen, a unique sand drift area surrounded by forests and heathlands. This open terrain is ideal for picnics and offers expansive views of the diverse landscape. As you progress, you'll enter the Mandefjild, a heathland that bursts into vibrant purple hues during late summer. The trail is well-marked with green posts, guiding you through the most picturesque sections of the reserve.
Historical Landmarks
One of the notable historical features along the route is the Landweer, a medieval defensive wall marking the border between Friesland and Drenthe. This earthwork was constructed to protect against invading forces and stands as a testament to the region's strategic importance in the past. Further along, you'll encounter the 'holle weg' or hollow way, an ancient sunken road that has been in use for over 700 years, serving as a vital connection between Friesland and Drenthe.
Natural Highlights
The trail also passes by several pingoruïnes, such as the Harmsdobbe and Pûpedobbe. These are small, nutrient-poor lakes formed during the last Ice Age, now serving as habitats for unique plant species like water trefoil and snake root, as well as breeding grounds for various dragonflies.
Navigation and Preparation
To ensure a smooth hiking experience, it's advisable to use HiiKER for detailed maps and trail information. The trail is relatively flat, making it suitable for families and hikers seeking a leisurely walk. However, it's always wise to wear appropriate footwear and carry water, especially during warmer months.
