Loop
“Wander Texel’s windswept dunes and valleys, where wildflowers, rare birds, and sea-shaped history entwine.”
Starting from the northern reaches of Texel, the Eierlandsche and Grote Vallei Loop offers a gentle 7 km (about 4.3 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Ecomare nature museum and visitor center, a well-known landmark on the island, which also serves as an excellent introduction to the region’s unique ecology.
Getting There
Reaching the trailhead is straightforward. From Den Helder, take the ferry to Texel, then use local bus services—such as line 28—to reach the Ecomare stop. For those arriving by car, ample parking is available at Ecomare, situated at Ruijslaan 92, 1796 AZ De Koog, Texel.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The loop meanders through the Eierlandsche Duinen and the Grote Vallei, two of Texel’s most celebrated dune landscapes. Navigation is simple, with well-marked paths and clear signage throughout. For precise route tracking and wayfinding, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS guidance, ensuring you stay on course.
Landscapes and Natural Highlights
The first section of the hike leads you through expansive dune fields, where shifting sands and resilient marram grass create a dynamic landscape. At roughly 2 km (1.2 miles) in, you’ll enter the Grote Vallei, a broad, low-lying valley that was once part of a tidal inlet. This area is now a haven for birdlife, especially during migration seasons—look for spoonbills, avocets, and various species of geese and ducks.
Flora, Fauna, and Seasonal Interest
Spring and early summer bring a burst of wildflowers, including orchids and sea lavender, while autumn sees the arrival of large flocks of migratory birds. The dunes are also home to rabbits, foxes, and occasionally grazing Highland cattle, which help maintain the open landscape.
Historical Significance
The region’s history is deeply tied to the sea. The Grote Vallei was shaped by centuries of tidal action before being diked and drained for agriculture in the 19th century. Remnants of old dikes and drainage channels are still visible, offering a glimpse into Texel’s ongoing battle with the North Sea.
Facilities and Practical Tips
Restrooms, a café, and interpretive exhibits are available at Ecomare, making it an ideal spot to begin or end your hike. The trail is mostly sandy with some grassy sections, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash in nature reserves. Weather can be changeable, so bring layers and rain protection.
This loop is a perfect introduction to Texel’s wild northern landscapes, blending natural beauty, rich birdlife, and a fascinating history shaped by the sea.
