“Wander through blooming heather, ancient dolmens, and tranquil woods on this enchanting, history-rich loop.”
The Kamperzand and Havelte West Loop is a scenic 22-kilometer (approximately 13.7 miles) trail with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all skill levels. The trailhead is located near Van Helomaweg 14, 7971 PX Havelte, Netherlands.
Getting There
For those traveling by car, ample parking is available at the trailhead on Van Helomaweg. If you're using public transportation, the nearest train station is in Meppel. From Meppel, you can take a bus to Havelte; the bus stop is a short walk from the trailhead.
Trail Overview
The loop begins with a gentle path through mixed woodlands, featuring oak and beech trees. The first 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) are relatively flat, allowing hikers to ease into the journey. As you progress, the trail opens up to expansive heathlands, especially prominent between the 6 to 10-kilometer (3.7 to 6.2 miles) marks. These heathlands are particularly vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms, painting the landscape in shades of purple.
Significant Landmarks
Around the 12-kilometer (7.5 miles) point, you'll encounter the Holtingerveld area, a Natura 2000 reserve known for its rich biodiversity. This region is home to several dolmens (prehistoric stone tombs) and burial mounds, offering a glimpse into the area's ancient history. The trail also passes near the charming hamlets of Oosterzand and Westerzand, where traditional Saxon farms and a historic sheepfold can be observed.
Flora and Fauna
The diverse habitats along the trail support a variety of wildlife. Birdwatchers may spot species such as the European stonechat and the common linnet in the heathlands. The woodlands are home to roe deer and red squirrels, while the open fields may reveal grazing sheep, especially near the sheepfolds.
Historical Significance
The Havelte region is steeped in history. During World War II, the Germans established a military airbase, Fliegerhorst Havelte, in the area. Although it was heavily bombed by the Allies and never became operational, remnants of this history are still visible along the trail. Additionally, the presence of dolmens and burial mounds indicates that this area has been inhabited since prehistoric times.
Navigation and Safety
The trail is well-marked, but it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on course. The terrain is mostly flat, but some sections can be sandy, especially in the heathlands. Wearing sturdy hiking boots is recommended. There are limited facilities along the route, so carrying sufficient water and snacks is essential.
Final Stretch
The last 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) of the loop take you through a mix of forested areas and open fields, gradually leading back to the trailhead. This section offers a peaceful conclusion to the hike, with opportunities to reflect on the diverse landscapes and historical sites encountered along the way.
