Point-to-Point
“Wander from Sleen’s historic heart to Coevorden’s storied castle, through fields alive with colour and birdsong.”
Starting from the village of Sleen, this section of the Pieterpad covers approximately 21 km (13 miles) of flat terrain, making it accessible for most hikers. The route begins near the historic Sleen church, a recognizable landmark in the heart of the village, and heads south toward Coevorden, a town known for its medieval castle and star-shaped fortifications.
Getting There Sleen is easily reached by public transport from Emmen or Assen, with regular bus services stopping at Sleen’s central bus stop, close to the church. If arriving by car, parking is available near the church and village center. Coevorden, the endpoint, has a train station with direct connections to Zwolle and Emmen, making return travel straightforward.
Trail Experience and Navigation The path follows well-marked Pieterpad signs, but for detailed navigation and real-time updates, HiiKER is recommended. The trail is almost entirely flat, with negligible elevation gain—less than a meter (3 feet)—making it suitable for beginners or those seeking a leisurely walk.
Landscapes and Nature Leaving Sleen, the trail passes through open farmland and Drenthe’s characteristic hedgerows. Expect to see expansive fields, grazing sheep, and traditional Dutch farmhouses. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the ditches, and the air is filled with birdsong. The route skirts several small woodlands, where you might spot roe deer or hear woodpeckers.
Historical Highlights About 7 km (4.3 miles) into the hike, you’ll pass through the hamlet of Erm, notable for its centuries-old farms. Further along, the trail crosses the old peatlands that once fueled the region’s economy. Approaching Coevorden, the landscape shifts to more urban surroundings. Coevorden itself is steeped in history, with its origins as a fortified town dating back to the 11th century. The castle, visible as you enter the town, is one of the oldest in the Netherlands and worth a visit after your hike.
Points of Interest and Facilities There are several rest spots and benches along the route, particularly near Erm and the small village of Weijerswold, about 15 km (9.3 miles) from the start. Cafés and shops are limited along the trail, so carrying water and snacks is advisable. Public toilets are available in Sleen and Coevorden.
Wildlife and Seasonal Notes The flat, open fields attract a variety of birdlife, including lapwings, storks, and buzzards. In autumn, the woodlands display vibrant foliage, while winter hikes offer stark, peaceful landscapes with the possibility of frost or light snow.
Finishing in Coevorden, you’ll find plenty of options for refreshments and accommodation, as well as easy access to public transport for your onward journey.
