Loop
“From historic ramparts to tranquil shores, this vibrant loop weaves Curaçao’s wild beauty and colonial echoes.”
Starting from the outskirts of Willemstad, Curaçao, the loop begins near the historic Fort Nassau, perched above the Schottegat harbor. This fort, dating back to 1797, once guarded the island’s main port and now offers panoramic views of the city and the Caribbean Sea. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the fort’s entrance. For those using public transport, local buses from central Willemstad stop within a short walk of the fort, making it a convenient starting point.
Route Overview and Navigation
The loop covers approximately 16 km (about 10 miles) with negligible elevation gain, making it suitable for most fitness levels. The route is well-marked, but carrying the HiiKER app is recommended for real-time navigation and to stay on track, especially where the trail weaves through less-developed areas.
Fort Nassau to Moio Beach
Leaving Fort Nassau, the path descends gently toward the coastline, passing through dry scrubland dotted with divi-divi trees and cacti. Birdlife is abundant here, with the possibility of spotting troupials, bananaquits, and the occasional flamingo in nearby salt flats. After about 5 km (3 miles), the trail skirts the edge of the Schottegat, offering glimpses of Curaçao’s maritime activity and the colorful buildings of Willemstad in the distance.
Continuing west, the route transitions to quieter coastal stretches. At roughly the halfway point, you’ll reach Moio Beach, a secluded spot known for its calm, clear waters and coral fragments scattered along the shore. This is an ideal place for a rest or a swim, with shaded areas provided by overhanging sea grape trees. The beach is relatively undeveloped, so bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities.
Return via Inland Trails
The return leg heads inland, looping through a mix of open terrain and low-lying woodland. The landscape here is shaped by centuries of trade and colonial history, with occasional remnants of plantation walls and wells visible along the route. Keep an eye out for iguanas basking on rocks and the distinctive call of the Caribbean elaenia.
Historical and Natural Highlights
Fort Nassau itself is a highlight, offering insight into Curaçao’s strategic importance during the colonial era. The fort’s cannons and thick stone walls are reminders of the island’s turbulent past. The surrounding area is rich in native flora, including rare orchids and bromeliads, especially after seasonal rains.
Getting There
By car, follow signs from central Willemstad to Fort Nassau, located on Fort Nassauweg. Ample parking is available at the fort. For public transport, take a local bus from the main terminal in Willemstad toward the Schottegat area, alighting at the stop nearest Fort Nassauweg; from there, it’s a short walk to the trailhead.
This loop offers a blend of history, coastal scenery, and wildlife, making it a rewarding day hike for those seeking to explore Curaçao’s natural and cultural heritage.
