Loop
“Wander through reed-fringed wetlands, historic forts, and wildflower meadows beneath endless Dutch skies.”
Starting from the outskirts of Hilversum, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) loop trail offers a flat, easy walk through a tapestry of Dutch landscapes, with virtually no elevation gain. The trailhead is conveniently located near Hilversumse Bovenmeent, a residential area on the eastern edge of Hilversum, easily accessible by public transport—Hilversum station is well-connected by train from Amsterdam and Utrecht, and local buses can take you close to the starting point. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the Bovenmeent neighborhood or at the Fort Uitermeer visitor area.
Through Wetlands and Woodlands
The route quickly immerses you in the serene wetlands of the Bovenmeent, a nature reserve characterized by reed beds, open water, and willow thickets. Early in the hike, expect to see a variety of waterfowl, including herons and grebes, especially in spring and summer. The path is well-marked and mostly follows wide, flat dike roads and gravel tracks, making it suitable for all fitness levels and ideal for those seeking a leisurely pace.
Fort Uitermeer and the Vecht
At around 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll reach Fort Uitermeer, a 19th-century fortress that once formed part of the New Dutch Waterline, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fort, now partially restored, sits on the banks of the Vecht River and is surrounded by lush greenery. Interpretive signs explain its role in Dutch military history, and the adjacent café offers a pleasant spot for a break. The river views here are particularly scenic, with boats drifting past and kingfishers darting along the water.
Grote Meer and Naardermeer Nature Reserve
Continuing east, the trail skirts the edge of the Grote Meer, a tranquil lake fringed by marshes and meadows. This section, between 8 and 12 km (5–7.5 miles), is a haven for birdwatchers—look for spoonbills, cormorants, and, if you’re lucky, the rare purple heron. The path then enters the Naardermeer, the oldest nature reserve in the Netherlands, protected since 1906. The reserve is famous for its biodiversity, with otters, grass snakes, and a rich variety of orchids and wildflowers in summer. Boardwalks and observation hides allow for quiet wildlife viewing without disturbing the habitat.
Return via Naarden and Open Fields
The final stretch leads you past the historic town of Naarden, known for its star-shaped fortifications visible from the trail. The route then loops back through open polder fields, where you’ll see grazing cattle and expansive Dutch skies. The last few kilometers are easy walking along quiet country lanes, returning you to the starting point near Hilversumse Bovenmeent.
Navigation and Preparation
The entire loop is well-signposted, but for detailed navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. The flat terrain and good paths mean standard walking shoes are sufficient, though waterproof footwear is recommended after rain. Bring binoculars for birdwatching, and pack water and snacks, as services are limited outside the main landmarks. The trail is accessible year-round, but spring and early summer offer the best wildlife viewing and wildflower displays.
