Point-to-Point
“Wander through emerald fields, ancient woods, and storied villages on this picturesque Dutch countryside journey.”
Starting from the charming twin villages of Bunschoten and Spakenburg, this 24 km (about 15 miles) route offers a flat, easy walk through the heart of the Dutch countryside, with virtually no elevation gain. The trailhead is conveniently located near the historic harbor of Spakenburg, a well-known spot famous for its traditional wooden boats and vibrant Saturday market. Both villages are easily accessible by public transport, with regular buses from Amersfoort Central Station, or by car with ample parking available near the harbor area.
Through the Heart of Dutch Farmland
Leaving the bustle of Spakenburg behind, the trail quickly immerses you in the open polder landscape, a patchwork of green fields, grazing cattle, and narrow canals. The first few kilometers wind through this quintessentially Dutch scenery, with wide skies and the occasional windmill dotting the horizon. Birdlife is abundant here—look out for storks, herons, and lapwings, especially in spring and early summer.
Overbosch Forest and Rural Lanes
At around 8 km (5 miles), you’ll enter Overbosch, a small but enchanting woodland that provides a welcome change of scenery. The forest is home to ancient oaks and beeches, and in spring, the forest floor is often carpeted with wildflowers. This is a good spot for a rest, with benches scattered along the main path. Keep an eye out for deer and foxes, which are sometimes seen darting through the undergrowth.
Exiting Overbosch, the route follows quiet rural lanes and farm tracks, passing through the hamlet of Stoutenburg. Here, you’ll find the historic Stoutenburg Castle, now a nature education center, which dates back to the 13th century. The castle grounds are open to visitors and make an excellent detour if you’re interested in local history.
Koninginneweg and the Approach to Achterveld
The final stretch of the hike follows Koninginneweg, a scenic country road lined with traditional Dutch farmhouses and fields of crops. This section is particularly peaceful, with little traffic and expansive views across the Gelderse Vallei. As you approach Achterveld, the landscape becomes slightly more wooded, and you’ll pass several small nature reserves managed for local flora and fauna.
Achterveld itself is a welcoming village with a few cafés and shops, perfect for a post-hike refreshment. The village is served by local buses connecting to Amersfoort and Barneveld, making your return journey straightforward.
Navigation and Preparation
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to download the trail map and track your progress. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this hike suitable for all fitness levels, and it can be comfortably completed in 6–7 hours at a leisurely pace. Bring water and snacks, as services are limited between villages, and be prepared for changeable weather—rain is always a possibility in the Netherlands.
This hike offers a perfect blend of rural tranquility, natural beauty, and glimpses into Dutch history, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced walkers.
