Loop
“Stroll through Zeeland’s living history—where dikes, wildflowers, and echoes of lost villages meet the sea.”
Starting from the outskirts of Brouwershaven, a charming historic town in Zeeland, the Bommenede via Zeedijk and Noord Bos Weg loop covers approximately 13 km (about 8 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Noorddijk and Zeedijk, just northeast of Brouwershaven’s old harbor, a spot easily reached by car with parking available nearby. For those using public transport, buses from Zierikzee or Rotterdam connect to Brouwershaven, with the nearest stop at Brouwershaven Dorp, a short walk from the starting point.
Historic Brouwershaven and Bommenede
The route begins by skirting the historic center of Brouwershaven, a town founded in the 13th century and once a bustling port. As you set out, you’ll pass remnants of the old city walls and the Grote Kerk, a striking Gothic church dating back to the 15th century. Heading north, the trail soon leads you toward the site of the former village of Bommenede, which was lost to flooding in the 17th century. Today, only subtle landscape features and interpretive signs hint at its existence, offering a poignant reminder of Zeeland’s ongoing battle with the sea.
Zeedijk: Dikes and Waterways
Following the Zeedijk, you’ll walk atop one of the region’s characteristic sea dikes, which have protected the land from the North Sea for centuries. This section, stretching for about 4 km (2.5 miles), provides expansive views over the Grevelingenmeer, a vast saltwater lake created after the construction of the Brouwersdam. Birdwatchers will want to bring binoculars—this area is a haven for migratory birds, including avocets, oystercatchers, and various species of geese and ducks. The dike itself is a testament to Dutch engineering, with interpretive panels explaining the history of land reclamation and flood defense.
Noord Bos Weg and Nature Reserves
Turning inland at Noord Bos Weg, the landscape shifts to a patchwork of meadows, reed beds, and small woodlands. This quieter section, about 5 km (3 miles), is rich in wildflowers during spring and summer, and you may spot hares, roe deer, or even a fox darting across the fields. The Noord Bos nature reserve, just off the main route, is worth a short detour for its tranquil ponds and stands of willow and alder. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this stretch particularly pleasant for families and casual walkers.
Navigation and Facilities
The entire loop is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore optional side trails. There are few facilities along the route itself, so bring water and snacks. Public toilets and cafés can be found back in Brouwershaven, where you can also enjoy local seafood at one of the harbor-side restaurants.
This easy, scenic loop offers a blend of Zeeland’s natural beauty, rich history, and unique relationship with the sea, making it a rewarding day out for hikers of all levels.
