Constructed in 1883 as part of the "Stelling van de Monden van de Maas en Haringvliet," this fort played a pivotal role in regional defense strategies. Today, the fort is managed by the Stichting Zuid-Hollands Landschap and houses a local scouting group.- Polder Landscapes and Dikes: Continuing along the trail, you'll be enveloped by expansive polder landscapes, a testament to the Netherlands' centuries-long battle against the sea. The dikes, some dating back to the 13th century, offer elevated views of the surrounding countryside and are adorned with wildflowers in the spring and summer months.- Fort Noorddijk: Around the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) mark, the trail leads to Fort Noorddijk. Built in 1884, this fort was integral to the defense line protecting the mouths of the Maas and Haringvliet rivers. During World War II, it was incorporated into the German Atlantic Wall.
