“Wander through blooming heather, watchtower vistas, and tranquil tree-lined paths on this scenic countryside loop.”
The Uitzichttoren, Banisveld, and Mariadreef Loop is an approximately 8-kilometer (5-mile) circular trail located near Boxtel in the North Brabant province of the Netherlands. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy hike is suitable for walkers of all ages and fitness levels.
Getting to the Trailhead
The trail begins near the Tour de Frans watchtower in the Banisveld area. For those traveling by car, set your GPS to Banisveld, 5281 Boxtel. Parking is available nearby. If using public transportation, take a train to Boxtel Station. From there, local bus services or a short taxi ride can bring you to the trailhead.
Trail Overview
Starting at the Tour de Frans watchtower, a 12-meter-high structure built in 2019, the trail offers panoramic views over the Kampina nature reserve. The watchtower is named after forester Frans Kapteijns, who initiated its construction through crowdfunding. From mid-August to mid-September, the surrounding heather blooms into a vibrant purple, creating a picturesque landscape.
Banisveld
As you proceed, you'll traverse Banisveld, a former agricultural area that has been transformed into a natural habitat. This region was once used by Boxtel residents for domestic waste disposal but has since been rehabilitated into a thriving ecosystem. Keep an eye out for diverse bird species and other wildlife that have made this area their home.
Mariadreef
Continuing along the loop, you'll reach Mariadreef, a serene path lined with mature trees. This section provides a tranquil walking experience, with the canopy offering shade and a sense of seclusion. The path is well-maintained and clearly marked, ensuring an easy navigation experience.
Historical Significance
The region around Boxtel has a rich history, with settlements dating back to medieval times. While the trail itself is primarily focused on natural beauty, the surrounding areas are dotted with historical landmarks and sites that reflect the area's cultural heritage.
