Loop
“Wander beneath sun-dappled trees, alongside shimmering ponds and meadows alive with birdsong and history.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts near the Bosrand in Oisterwijk, this gentle 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop offers a flat, accessible walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it ideal for families, beginners, or anyone seeking a relaxed day outdoors. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Jacob Reutenlaan and Bosrand, just a short walk from Oisterwijk’s train station, which is well-served by regional trains and buses. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Bosrand parking area, a popular access point for the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen nature reserve.
Navigating the Route
The loop follows a well-marked path through the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen, a celebrated nature reserve in North Brabant. Using HiiKER for navigation ensures you stay on track, as the area features a network of intersecting trails. The route is mostly on wide, sandy forest paths and well-maintained gravel tracks, making it suitable for all fitness levels and accessible for strollers or wheelchairs.
Landmarks and Natural Highlights
Early in the hike, you’ll pass through dense pine and deciduous woodland, where the morning light filters through the canopy and the air is filled with birdsong. At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail skirts the edge of several picturesque vennen—shallow, peat-rich ponds that are a hallmark of this region. These wetlands are home to a variety of waterfowl, including herons and grebes, and in spring and summer, dragonflies dart above the water’s surface.
Around the halfway mark, near the Jacob Reutenlaan, the landscape opens up to reveal heathland and open meadows. This is a good spot to pause for a picnic or simply enjoy the tranquility. Keep an eye out for roe deer grazing at the forest’s edge and listen for the distinctive calls of woodpeckers and nuthatches.
Historical and Cultural Context
The Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen area has a rich history, shaped by centuries of peat extraction and forestry. Many of the ponds you’ll see were originally dug for peat, which was used as fuel in the Middle Ages. Over time, the landscape was reclaimed by nature, creating the unique mosaic of woodland, heath, and wetland that exists today. The trail also passes close to several old farmsteads and the remnants of traditional Dutch windmills, offering a glimpse into the rural heritage of North Brabant.
Practical Information
The entire loop is flat, with an elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it accessible year-round. There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, as well as information boards detailing the local flora and fauna. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife. Public toilets and a café can be found near the Bosrand parking area, perfect for a pre- or post-hike refreshment.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER to ensure you follow the correct loop, as some junctions can be confusing due to the density of trails in the reserve. The trail is well-signposted, but having a digital map adds peace of mind, especially for first-time visitors.
