Loop
“Wander beside shimmering canals and wildflower meadows, where windmills and wildlife bring the Dutch countryside to life.”
Starting from the outskirts of Berkel en Rodenrijs, this 6 km (about 3.7 miles) loop follows the tranquil waterways and lush meadows of the Groene Hart region, with virtually no elevation gain—making it accessible for all levels of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Berkelsche Zweth, a well-known waterway, and is easily reached by public transport: take the RandstadRail (Metro Line E) to Berkel Westpolder station, then walk or cycle about 1.5 km (just under a mile) to the starting point. For those arriving by car, parking is available near Zwethkade Zuid, close to the water.Route Overview and NavigationThe route follows sections of the Groene Hartpad, a long-distance trail traversing the “Green Heart” of the Randstad, and Ackersdijkseweg, a rural road lined with characteristic Dutch farmhouses. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and signage, but for added confidence and route tracking, use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and waypoints.Landmarks and Points of InterestEarly in the hike, you’ll skirt the edge of the Berkelsche Zweth, a historic canal that once played a vital role in local trade and water management. The canal’s banks are dotted with traditional Dutch windmills, some of which date back to the 18th century, offering excellent photo opportunities and a glimpse into the region’s engineering heritage. As you continue, the trail meanders through the Groene Hart’s signature polder landscape—expansive green fields, grazing cattle, and wide-open skies. In spring and summer, the meadows burst with wildflowers and the air is alive with the calls of lapwings, godwits, and other wading birds. The area is a haven for birdwatchers, especially near the Ackerdijkse Plassen nature reserve, which lies just to the south of the route.Nature and WildlifeThe wetlands and waterways attract a variety of wildlife. Look for herons fishing along the banks, hares darting through the grass, and, if you’re lucky, the flash of a kingfisher. The Groene Hart is also home to rare orchids and other protected plant species, particularly in the less-trodden corners near the water.Historical ContextThis region has a rich agricultural history, shaped by centuries of land reclamation and water management. The dikes and canals you’ll see are part of an intricate system designed to keep the land dry and fertile. Many of the farmhouses along Ackersdijkseweg have stood for generations, some with plaques detailing their origins in the 19th century or earlier.Trail Logistics and PreparationWith a flat profile and mostly paved or well-maintained gravel paths, this hike is suitable for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape from the city. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the canal. While there are no major facilities directly on the route, Berkel en Rodenrijs offers shops and cafés for refreshments before or after your walk.Weather can be changeable, so bring a light rain jacket and sturdy walking shoes. The open landscape means little shade, so sun protection is recommended on clear days. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially near livestock and nature reserves. For navigation and real-time updates, HiiKER provides detailed maps and trail information, ensuring you stay on track and make the most of your journey through the heart of South Holland’s countryside.
