Loop
“Salt-kissed breezes, rolling dunes, and woodland whispers paint a vibrant journey through Bergen aan Zee’s coastal beauty.”
Begin your journey at the edge of Bergen aan Zee, a charming coastal village easily reached by bus from Alkmaar station or by car, with parking available near the main beach entrance. The trailhead is close to Zeeweg 33, right by the main beach pavilion, making it accessible for those arriving by public transport or vehicle.
Coastal Dunes and Beachfront
The first stretch leads you along the broad, sandy expanse of Bergen aan Zee’s beach. The North Sea’s salty breeze and the rhythmic sound of waves set the tone for a relaxing walk. The terrain is flat, with virtually no elevation gain—expect a total ascent of 0 metres (0 feet) over the entire 10 km (6.2 miles) loop. Keep an eye out for seabirds such as gulls and terns, and in the early morning or late evening, you might spot seals resting on the sandbanks offshore.
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the route veers inland, entering the protected dune landscape of the Noordhollands Duinreservaat. This area is renowned for its rolling dunes, covered in marram grass and dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer. The dunes provide habitat for rabbits, foxes, and a variety of songbirds. The sandy paths are well-marked, but navigation is straightforward—HiiKER offers reliable mapping for this region.
Woodlands and Open-Air Museum
At the halfway point, around 5 km (3.1 miles), the trail passes through a patch of mixed woodland, where pine and oak trees provide shade and shelter for deer and woodpeckers. The air is fragrant with pine needles, and the forest floor is often carpeted with moss and mushrooms in autumn.
Shortly after, you’ll arrive at the Openluchtmuseum (Open-Air Museum) Het Sterkenhuis, a significant cultural landmark. This museum showcases traditional North Holland farmhouses and rural life, with reconstructed buildings and historical exhibits. The area around the museum is perfect for a rest stop, with benches and picnic spots available.
Return via Scenic Dunes
The return leg follows a different route through the dunes, offering expansive views over the landscape and occasional glimpses of the sea. The sandy paths are interspersed with wooden boardwalks in wetter sections, ensuring easy passage even after rain. Wild ponies and Highland cattle are sometimes used for grazing in the reserve, helping to maintain the open character of the dunes—watch for these gentle animals as you walk.
Practical Information
The entire loop is approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) and rated easy, with no significant climbs or technical sections. The paths are mostly sandy or packed earth, suitable for sturdy walking shoes but not requiring specialized gear. Water and snacks are recommended, as services are limited once you leave the village. Dogs are allowed on most sections but must be leashed in the nature reserve.
Public transport users can take bus 866 from Alkmaar station directly to Bergen aan Zee, with the stop at Zeeweg just steps from the trailhead. For drivers, parking is available at the main beach lot on Zeeweg, though it can fill up quickly on sunny weekends.
This route offers a blend of coastal scenery, tranquil dunes, and a touch of local history, making it an ideal day hike for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape by the sea.
