Loop
“Stroll through blooming meadows, riverside willows, and echoes of Dutch history on this gentle countryside loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Meeuwen, a small village in the Dutch province of North Brabant, this 11 km (about 6.8 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Dorpsstraat and Heerenweg, easily reached by car with parking available in the village center. For those using public transport, buses from nearby towns such as Waalwijk or Gorinchem stop at Meeuwen, with the trailhead just a short walk from the bus stop.
Navigating the Route
The loop is well-marked and follows a combination of quiet country lanes, grassy dikes, and farm tracks. HiiKER is the recommended navigation tool for real-time route guidance and waypoints. The terrain is predominantly flat, with the highest point barely rising above sea level, so there’s no need to prepare for steep climbs or descents.
Highlights and Landmarks
The first section leads you through Heerenweide, a patchwork of meadows and pastures bordered by ancient hedgerows. In spring and summer, the fields are alive with wildflowers and the calls of lapwings and skylarks. At around 3 km (1.9 miles), you’ll pass the historic Heerenweide polder, a testament to centuries of Dutch water management. Look for the old drainage ditches and windmill foundations, reminders of the region’s ongoing battle with water.
Continuing along the Verbrande Loop, the trail skirts the edge of the Alm river. This section is particularly scenic, with willows lining the banks and the chance to spot herons, kingfishers, and sometimes roe deer grazing at dawn or dusk. The river’s name, “Verbrande,” meaning “burned,” refers to a devastating fire centuries ago that shaped the local landscape and folklore.
Nature and Wildlife
The area is a haven for birdwatchers, especially during migration seasons. Marsh harriers and storks are occasional visitors, and the meadows support a variety of butterflies and dragonflies. The flat, open landscape offers wide views across the polders, with distant church spires and farmhouses dotting the horizon.
Practical Tips
There are no significant elevation changes—total gain is less than 1 metre (3 feet)—so standard walking shoes are sufficient, though waterproof footwear is advisable after rain due to occasional muddy patches. The route passes through rural areas with limited facilities, so bring water and snacks. Public benches and picnic spots are scattered along the dikes, perfect for a break with a view.
Restrooms and refreshments can be found back in Meeuwen, where local cafés offer traditional Dutch pastries and coffee. The trail is suitable year-round, though spring and early summer are especially beautiful for wildflowers and birdlife. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash near livestock.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER before setting out, as mobile coverage can be patchy in some sections. The trail’s gentle nature and rich scenery make it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone interested in the unique landscape and history of the Dutch lowlands.
