Loop
“Stroll through timeless Dutch landscapes, where abbey echoes, wildflowers, and waterfowl paint a serene escape.”
Starting from the tranquil outskirts of Egmond-Binnen, this loop trail covers approximately 9 km (about 5.6 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible and leisurely walk for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the historic Benedictine Abbey of Egmond, a well-known landmark that’s easy to reach by public transport from Alkmaar or Amsterdam via bus, or by car with parking available in the village.
Navigating the Route
The loop follows a scenic path through the North Holland countryside, weaving along the Egmonderbinnenvaart canal and the Van Oldenborgh Weg. The route is flat and well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to track your progress and ensure you stay on course. The terrain consists mainly of paved and gravel farm roads, with occasional grassy sections, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
Shortly after leaving the abbey, the trail passes through the heart of Egmond-Binnen, a village with roots stretching back to the Middle Ages. The Benedictine Abbey itself is a highlight, with its peaceful gardens and centuries-old architecture. As you continue, the Egmonderbinnenvaart canal provides a serene backdrop, often dotted with waterfowl such as coots, grebes, and herons. The open fields surrounding the canal are home to grazing sheep and cows, and in spring and summer, wildflowers line the banks.
About halfway along the loop, you’ll reach Van Oldenborgh Weg, a rural lane bordered by traditional Dutch farmhouses and windbreaks of poplar trees. This section offers expansive views across the polder landscape, a testament to the region’s long history of land reclamation and water management. Keep an eye out for kestrels and buzzards circling overhead, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a hare darting through the fields.
Historical and Natural Significance
The Egmond area is steeped in history, with archaeological finds indicating habitation since Roman times. The abbey, originally founded in the 10th century, played a significant role in the region’s religious and cultural development. The surrounding polder landscape is a product of centuries of Dutch ingenuity, with dikes, canals, and pumping stations shaping the land into fertile farmland.
Getting There
To reach the trailhead, take a train to Alkmaar and transfer to a local bus heading toward Egmond-Binnen; the abbey is a short walk from the bus stop. If arriving by car, follow signs to Egmond-Binnen from the N512, and park near the abbey or in the village center.
This easy, flat loop is ideal for those seeking a peaceful countryside walk with a blend of history, wildlife, and classic Dutch scenery.
