Loop
“Stroll through whispering pines, sunlit dunes, and seaside breezes on this artful Bergen loop.”
Starting from the edge of Bergen, a charming Dutch village known for its artistic heritage and proximity to the North Sea, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy day out. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Bergerbosch forest, just a short walk from the Bergen town center. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Alkmaar station stop at Bergen Plein, from where it’s a 10-minute stroll to the forest entrance. Drivers can park at the Bergerbos parking area on Eeuwigelaan, a well-signposted lot close to the start.
Through Bergerbosch and the Dunes
The route begins by weaving through the Bergerbosch, a tranquil woodland of tall pines and ancient oaks. Early in the morning, the forest is alive with birdsong—look out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional roe deer darting between the trees. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the path transitions into the open heathland and sandy dunes that characterize the Noordhollands Duinreservaat, one of the largest dune reserves in the Netherlands. The sandy trails here are easy underfoot, and the landscape opens up to reveal sweeping views of wild grasses and scattered juniper bushes.
Schaapskooi Bergen and the Coastal Stretch
At around the 5 km (3 mile) mark, you’ll reach the Schaapskooi Bergen, a traditional sheepfold that’s still in use today. This historic structure is a nod to the region’s pastoral past, where shepherds grazed their flocks on the nutrient-poor dune soils. Interpretive signs explain the significance of sheep grazing in maintaining the unique biodiversity of the dunes. In spring and early summer, the area is dotted with wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees.
Continuing west, the trail gently undulates through more open dunes before reaching Bergen aan Zee at approximately 8 km (5 miles). Here, the North Sea comes into view, and the salty breeze signals your arrival at the coast. The wide sandy beach is a popular spot for a rest or picnic, and the nearby pavilions offer refreshments. Seabirds, including gulls and terns, are common sights along this stretch.
Return via Forest and Heath
The loop turns back inland, retracing part of the route through the dunes before re-entering the forest. The final 4–5 km (2.5–3 miles) wind through a mix of heath and woodland, with occasional glimpses of the village rooftops as you approach Bergen once more. The terrain remains flat and accessible throughout, making it suitable for families and less experienced hikers.
Navigation and Practical Tips
Waymarking is clear, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for peace of mind, especially where paths branch in the dunes. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, and public toilets are available at Bergen aan Zee. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain sections, particularly during bird nesting season.
This loop is accessible year-round, though the dunes can be windswept in winter and the forest pleasantly cool in summer. The combination of woodland, heath, and coast makes it a varied and rewarding walk, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the unique landscapes of North Holland.
