Loop
“Stroll through whispering woods, wild heath, and sparkling fens on a trail rich with history and hidden wildlife.”
Starting from the outskirts of Oisterwijk, a charming village in North Brabant, the Woeste Gedeelte, Buitengebint and Zurenhoek Loop offers a gentle 7 km (about 4.3 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen, a well-known nature reserve, and is easily reached by taking a train to Oisterwijk Station, followed by a short walk or local bus ride to the reserve’s main entrance. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the main Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen lot on Van Tienhovenlaan.
Woodlands, Heath, and Wetlands
The route meanders through a mosaic of habitats, beginning with dense pine and oak forests that quickly give way to open heathland. The “Woeste Gedeelte” section is known for its wild, untamed character—expect to see carpets of heather, especially vibrant in late summer, and scattered juniper bushes. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail skirts the edge of several serene fens, remnants of ancient peat bogs that are now home to dragonflies, frogs, and a variety of waterfowl. Keep an eye out for the rare black woodpecker and, if you’re lucky, roe deer grazing at the forest’s edge.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At roughly the halfway point, the path passes close to the Buitengebint, a historic area once used for cattle grazing. Here, you’ll find old wooden fences and interpretive signs detailing the traditional land management practices that shaped the landscape. The Zurenhoek section, around 5 km (3.1 miles) into the loop, is notable for its acidic soils and unique plant life, including sundews and bog rosemary. This part of the trail can be damp after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire loop is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore optional side trails. The terrain is mostly flat and consists of sandy paths, forest tracks, and occasional boardwalks over wetter areas. There are benches at several scenic spots, perfect for a rest or picnic.
Historical and Natural Significance
The Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen area has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Middle Ages. The landscape was shaped by centuries of peat cutting, grazing, and forestry, resulting in the diverse habitats seen today. Conservation efforts have restored many of the fens and heathlands, making this loop a showcase of Dutch nature management.
Public toilets and a visitor center with refreshments are located near the main entrance, making this an ideal half-day outing for families, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking a peaceful walk through one of North Brabant’s most beautiful natural areas.
