Loop
“Beneath towering oaks and along blooming heath, this easy loop reveals North Brabant’s tranquil charm.”
Starting from the outskirts of Bergen op Zoom, this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk through the varied landscapes of North Brabant, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy, scenic day out. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Landgoed Lievensberg estate, easily accessible by car via the A58 motorway, with parking available at the main entrance to the estate. For those using public transport, Bergen op Zoom railway station is the nearest major stop; from there, local buses or a short taxi ride will bring you to the trailhead.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for extra confidence, especially at junctions where forest paths intersect. The loop format means you’ll return to your starting point without needing to arrange a shuttle.
Landscapes and Key Features
The first stretch leads you through the stately avenues of Landgoed Lievensberg, a historic estate known for its mature beech and oak trees. The Dubbeledreef, a double row of ancient trees, is a highlight early in the walk—look for the impressive canopy overhead, especially beautiful in autumn. At around 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll pass the Hildernishut, a rustic shelter that’s a popular rest spot for walkers and cyclists.
Nature and Wildlife
The trail meanders through a mix of woodland, heath, and open meadows. In spring and summer, the heathland bursts into color with wildflowers and heather. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional buzzard circling above the clearings. Roe deer are sometimes spotted at dawn or dusk, especially in quieter sections away from the main estate paths.
Historical and Cultural Points
Bergen op Zoom and its surrounding estates have a rich history dating back to medieval times. The Landgoed Lievensberg estate itself was established in the 19th century and features remnants of old carriageways and ornamental ponds. The area played a role in regional defense during the Eighty Years’ War, and while the trail doesn’t pass major fortifications, the landscape’s strategic value is evident in its elevated, open vistas.
Trail Conditions and Facilities
The path is mostly wide and well-maintained, suitable for all fitness levels and accessible year-round. Expect a mix of sandy soil and forest floor, with occasional muddy patches after rain. Benches and picnic tables are scattered along the route, particularly near the Hildernishut and at scenic viewpoints. There are no cafes or shops directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. Public toilets are available at the main entrance to Landgoed Lievensberg.
Planning Your Visit
Allow 3–4 hours for a leisurely walk, including stops for photos and wildlife spotting. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in the estate areas. The loop’s proximity to Bergen op Zoom makes it easy to combine with a visit to the town’s historic center or a meal at one of its many cafes after your hike.
